KEY SEQUENCE
  • Down by 11 after Edinboro scored the first bucket of the second half, Gannon reeled off 56 points in the final 19 minutes to secure a convincing win. Still trailing by six as the clock ticked under 15 minutes to play, the Golden Knights hit their next six shots from the floor, including four 3-pointers, to flip the script and lead 59-51 three minutes later as they sealed their third straight win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) hit the opening basket of the game, then gave Gannon the lead back with another jumper 90 seconds in. A Joe Fustine (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) 3-pointer broke a tie to make it 9-6, and Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) did the same to make it 12-9 at the 15:27 mark of the first half.
  • Kofi Mills (London, England/Martin Van Buren (N.Y.)) finished a feed from Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) on the next possession, then gave the Knights their largest lead of the half on two free throws to make it 16-9. Porter again made it a seven-point lead on a fastbreak finish as the clock ticked under 12 minutes, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Alex Jay pulled Edinboro to within one.
  • A pair of Porter free throws made it a three-point game, but five straight points from Trey Staunch turned it back into a lead for the hosts. Porter answered again to tie it, but Edinboro pushed head with four straight to take its biggest lead up to that point.
  • That's when Mike Haysbert (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Technology and Environmental Science) hit a jumper, followed by a 3-pointer, a rebound and two free throws out of Daniel Sapp (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) to quickly make it a three-point lead for Gannon at 29-26. The Fighting Scots had the final say in the first half though, netting 14 of the final 16 points of the period to take a nine-point lead into the locker room.
  • A basket to start the second half handed the Scots their largest lead of the game at 42-31. Gannon began to chip away almost immediately though, getting a big 3-pointer from Joe Fustine (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and a finish from Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) after an offensive board from Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) to make it a six-point game just over 90 seconds into the period.
  • Layups from Porter on a stick-back and Olawoye off a steal made it a six-point game once again, and a technical earned by the Gannon bench seemed to do the trick, as another theft and bucket from Olawoye started what would turn into a 16-0 run for the guests.
  • A few empty possessions followed that basket, but Olawoye drained back-to-back treys to tie it up, then fed the ball inside to Dodds, who made it 50-48 and a lead the Golden Knights wouldn't give back. A Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) three-point play made it an eight-point lead, and he answered an Edinboro 3-pointer with one of his own to get it right back to 59-51.
  • The Fighting Scots found their footing again, and managed to hit back-to-back 3-pointers to slice it to seven at 66-59 with 8:21 still to play. Olawoye had an answer for that though, hitting a triple coming out of the media timeout to push it back to double digits. The freshman did the same thing two minutes later, making it a 74-64 lead for the Knights.
  • Olawoye's putback with 3:26 to play gave them the largest lead of the night for either side at 14. The hosts would chip away with some made shots, getting a close as seven, but didn't cut the lead to even two possessions until less than five seconds remained as Gannon hit their final six free throws to prevent any heroics.

GAME NOTES
  • The back-and-forth first half featured five lead changes and four ties. The second half was much more one-sided, with the Golden Knights tying it up then getting the only lead change of the period during their run.
  • The Golden Knights converted on eight straight possessions and 12 of 15 covering a stretch of over nine minutes. Only one of those possessions ended in a missed shot, as Gannon pulled in four offensive rebounds to just one defensive board for the Scots during the 32-16 run for the guests.
  • The 56 points in the second half is the most by the Golden Knights since also netting 56 in the second period against Cheyney on Dec. 9, 2011. The last time Gannon had more in a half was March 1, 2008, when it posted 59 in the second half of an 89-70 win over Ashland in the GLIAC tournament.
  • The Knights shot 55.6 percent in the second half, including 8-of-12 from 3-point range. That helped them to a 46.3 night overall, their third-best of the season and highest since shooting 49.2 against Fayetteville State on the opening night of the Gary Miller Classic in November.
  • Four player scored in double figures for Gannon, led by Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial), who netted a career-high 23 on 9-of-15 shooting for his second 20-point outburst in the past three games. The freshman also filled up the stat sheet with six assists, five rebounds and three steals.
  • Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) joined him with 17 points to mark his fifth consecutive game scoring double digits. Joe Fustine (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) added 11 points and eight rebounds, with Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) chipping in 15 points and six assists.
  • Gannon turned in a season-best 18 assists on just 31 made buckets, and also posted a season-low 11 turnovers while forcing 14 -- 10 on steals--out of Edinboro.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns home for its only game on its own court in a stretch of three weeks on Saturday, hosting Clarion.
  • The 3 p.m. tip from the Hammermill Center will feature live video, live stats and live audio.

  • The Golden Eagles sit at 4-9 (2-7 PSAC) after a 97-64 road loss against red-hot Slippery Rock Wednesday evening.
