Gannon Football Falls In PSAC Crossover Tilt At West Chester

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: No. 23/25 West Chester 31, Gannon 7
  • Records: Gannon (0-2, 0-0 PSAC West), West Chester (2-0, 0-0 PSAC East)
  • Location: West Chester, Pa. – John A. Farrell Stadium
  • The Short Story – Gannon forced a fumble on the game's first offensive play and converted it into an early 7-0 lead, and the Golden Knight defense held onto that lead for much of the first quarter. West Chester managed to tie it late in the period, and turned the game with 17 points in the second quarter to hold the guests at bay.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • James Simms (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) pounced on a WCU fumble on the Golden Rams' first snap of the game, and after two Marcus Jones (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) rushes for nine yards pushed the ball to the 1-yard line, Jimmy Keefe (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/St. Edward) capped the short drive with a scoring plunge to make it 7-0 just 80 seconds into the game.
  • The two defenses forced punts on the next four combined drives, but the hosts were able to put together a pair of third down conversions to cap a 75-yard drive to make it a 7-7 game with 3:06 left in the first.
  • A West Chester field goal early in the second quarter put the hosts in the lead for the first time, and they were able to put together two touchdown drives before halftime to make it 24-7 at the break.
  • WCU added to its lead on its first drive of the third quarter, but the Gannon defense stood tall the rest of the way, allowing just one first down and 15 total offensive yards over the final 27-plus minutes

GAME NOTES
  • After allowing a first down on a penalty on the first play of a West Chester drive that started at the 10:05 mark of the third quarter, the Golden Knight defense did not allow another first down. That Ram drive ended in a punt, the next in an Anthony Howard (Temple Hills, Md./Bishop O'Connell) interception, and the final three were three-and-outs.
  • Erie native Alex Greenawalt (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) turned in a career performance in his second game in a Golden Knight uniform, hauling in six catches for 105 yards. The senior, who played four years at Division I Colgate, had never reached 105 receiving yards in a collegiate game.
  • Marcus Jones (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) grinded out 62 rushing yards on 20 attempts, and now sits third all-time in Gannon history with 2,853 career rushing yards.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns home on Saturday, September 15 to face Kutztown in its final contest before heading into PSAC West play.
  • Game time is scheduled for noon at McConnell Family Stadium.
  • Kutztown topped California (Pa.) 34-31 on Saturday to move to 2-0 on the season.
  • Gannon and Kutztown took just two years off since their last PSAC crossover series, as the Golden Knights scored 103 combined points to earn back-to-back wins in 2014 and 2015.
