No. 16 Gannon Women’s Volleyball Wraps Up Concord Classic with Wins Over King (Tenn.) and Kentucky State

  • The Short Story: The 16th-ranked Gannon Lady Knights volleyball team picked up two more victories over King (Tenn.) and Kentucky State to conclude play in the Concord Classic. Gannon posted a 3-0 sweep of King and a 3-1 triumph over Kentucky State on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon opened the match with a convincing 25-13 victory in the first set.
  • The Lady Knights jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first set, highlighted by kills from sophomore Johanna Gregory (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) and junior Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder).
  • Gannon used two more 4-0 spurts to take a 12-5 and a 19-11 lead in the opening set.
  • The Lady Knights went on to score the final four points of the first set for the 25-13 victory. Freshman Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) recorded back-to-back kills and sophomore Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) capped the set with a kill.
  • After a highly contested beginning to the second set, Gannon pulled ahead with an 8-1 outburst for a 16-9 lead. Senior Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha) notched a pair of kills in the scoring run.
  • Johnson and Sampson put down the final two kills for Gannon for a 25-17 victory in set two.
  • Trailing 3-0 in the third set, Gannon scored three consecutive points to tie the score.
  • A kill from Sampson handed Gannon a narrow 15-13 edge.
  • Following a Gannon timeout, the Lady Knights scored five of the final six points in the third set.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Sampson smacked a career-high 14 kills in the win and just missed recording a double-double with nine digs.
  • Smith, freshman Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) and Kerestes all added six kills each for the Lady Knights.
  • Gannon hit .337 as a team for the match while King hit just .134 as a team.
  • The Lady Knights held a decisive edge in kills (43-29) and assists (42-28).
  • Johnson had three block assists in a match for the third time this season.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Sophomore Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) recorded 30 or more assists in a match for the sixth time this season, including a streak of five straight.
  • Gannon recorded its ninth straight sweep with its 3-0 victory.
  • Through 10 games this season, Gannon had held its opponents to just 11 combined solo blocks.

  • Kentucky State edged the Lady Knights for a 26-24 set victory to open the match.
  • Gannon responded with resounding 25-7, 25-14 and 25-10 set victories to claim the victory.
  • The Lady Knights opened the second set with a commanding 11-1 lead. Gannon then scored six straight points for a 17-3 lead.
  • Gannon opened the third set with a 6-0 lead. Beyers had four aces in the scoring run.
  • McClung put down a kill to hand Gannon a 20-10 lead in the third set.
  • Gannon used three straight kills to open the match-clinching fourth set with a 3-0 lead.
  • Both teams went back-and-forth in the final set before Gannon clinched the match with the final 11 points for the 3-1 victory.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon had three players (Lanman, Sampson and Smith) with 10 or more kills in the match.
  • Beyers and junior Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) recorded five aces each for the lady Knights.
  • Leitshuh added a game-high 17 digs for the Lady Knights.
  • The Lady Knights had a season-high 15 aces.
  • The Lady Knights hit .262 for the match and .474 in the second set.

  • Prior to today's opening set, Gannon had not lost a match set since the first match of the 2018 season.
