  • The Short Story: The No. 14 Gannon women's volleyball team was handed its first loss of 2018 in a 3-0 defeat against East Stroudsburg Friday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

  • "We're disappointed with our performance tonight, I guess. But the biggest problem for us was the ESU middle attack, which dominated us. However, I fully trust this team to bounce back with a winning performance tomorrow."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon opened the first set with a kill by senior Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha), but East Stroudsburg scored the next seven points for a quick 7-1 lead.
  • The Lady Knights ripped off a five-point run in the first set as they trailed 17-16.
  • Gannon tied the first set at 18 but ESU maintained a narrow lead for the remainder of the set for a 25-22 victory.
  • Kills from sophomore Aubree Lanman (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights) and freshman Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) helped Gannon build a 4-2 cushion in the second set.
  • ESU eventually used a 6-1 run in the second set for a 21-16 lead.
  • Gannon countered with a 6-1 scoring spurt of its own to tie the second set at 22.
  • The Lady Knights extended the set on two separate occasions before ESU collected a narrow 29-27 extended set victory.
  • The Warriors closed out the Lady Knights with a 25-21 third set victory.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Despite the 3-0 final score, the match was extremely competitive with 24 ties and 10 lead changes. The second set saw 15 ties and seven total lead changes.
  • Sampson and freshman Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) paced the Gannon offense with 11 kills each.
  • Sampson added four service aces and eight digs for the Lady Knights.
  • Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) had a game-high 13 digs while sophomore Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) handed out 34 assists.
  • Gannon's .129 hitting percentage is the lowest total this season.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon had lost just two sets all season entering tonight's matchup.
  • Gannon had its 11-match winning streak snapped. 
  • McClung has registered double-digit kills in three of her past four matches.  
  • Sampson has smacked double-digit kills in each of her past three matches and six times this season.
  • Gannon returned to the court for its first action since last Friday (September 7), a 3-1 victory over Kentucky State in the Concord Classic.
  • Gannon will play one more match on the road to conclude the team's opening 13-game road swing in 2018.
