No. 16 Gannon Women’s Volleyball Storms Past UVA-Wise and Concord Thursday

  • The Short Story: The 16th-ranked Gannon Lady Knights volleyball team collected two more sweeps and drove its winning streak to nine games to begin the 2018 season with 3-0 victories over UVA-Wise and Concord on Thursday in the Concord Classic. Head coach Matt Darling picked up his 250th career win as the head coach of the Lady Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon pulled ahead early for a 6-3 lead in the first set before using a four-point run for a 13-7 lead.
  • A pair of kills from freshman Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) highlighted another 4-0 run to conclude the first set.
  • An ace from freshman Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) handed the Lady Knights a 5-2 edge in the second set.
  • Sampson extended the Lady Knights lead to 12-6 with a kill in the second set.  
  • Back-to-back kills from McClung put Gannon up 16-8 and the Lady Knights prevailed in set two by a final score of 25-13.
  • Gannon never trailed in the third and final set after opening the set with a 4-0 lead.
 
GAME NOTES
  • With 11 digs this afternoon, junior Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) is now averaging 4.33 digs per set.
  • McClung registered a career-high 17 kills. It's her first collegiate match with double-digit kills in her career.
  • Freshman Valeria Torres (Gurabo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) also had a career day with 36 assists and 11 digs.
  • The match featured just five ties and three lead changes.
  • Gannon hit .640 in the second set with 17 kills.
  • The Lady Knights had nine aces for the second time this season.
  • McClung also led the Lady Knights with two blocks.  
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is ranked No. 16 in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Poll.
  • UVA-Wise was tabbed at 11 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) preseason poll.
  • Thursday's match marked the first ever meeting between Gannon and Virginia Wise.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon and Concord went back-and-forth in the first set with both teams using several scoring runs. Ultimately Gannon earned a 28-26 set victory.
  • Back-to-back kills from Johanna Gregory (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) put the Lady Knights up 18-15 in the first set.
  • The Lady Knights rallied to score the final three points of the set to earn the 28-26 victory. Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha), Gregory and Sampson each recorded kills to hand Gannon the set win.
  • Gannon opened the second set with a 5-1 edge and later used a nine-point scoring run for a 24-9 lead.
  • The Lady Knights scored the final 12 points in the final set for a convincing 25-8 set victory.
 
GAME NOTES
  • The Golden Knights were balanced offensively. Gregory led the way with a game-high 15 kills while sophomore Laura Bebinger (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) had 13.
  • Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha) added nine kills and Sampson smacked eight kills for the Lady knights.
  • Gannon hit above .300 in all three sets and concluded the match with a .412 hitting percentage.
  • The Lady Knights held an 8-2 edge in blocks and a 6-2 advantage in service aces.
  • Torres handed out 42 assists for Gannon and added six digs.
  • Gregory (.542) and Johnson (.533) each hit above .500 for the Lady Knights.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • With the victory, the Lady Knights lead the all-time series 3-0 against Concord.
  • Darling notched his 250th victory at the helm of the Lady Knights volleyball program.
  • The first set of the match was one of the most competitive of the entire season for the Lady Knights with 17 ties and 14 lead changes.
  • Leitshuh recorded double-digit digs in each match on Thursday.

  • Gannon concludes play in the Concord Classic with a pair of matches tomorrow against King (Tenn.) and Kentucky State.
