Gannon Men’s Soccer Extends Winning Streak with Thrilling 2-1 Home Win Over Urbana

  • The Short Story – Senior Tyler Martin (Cambridge, Ontario/Monsignor Doyle) connected on a bouncing ball to net the game-winner for Gannon men's soccer with just 5:24 remaining in the match as the Golden Knights used a second half surge to defeat Urbana, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at a cool McConnell Family Stadium. The Golden Knights rallied with a pair of second half goals to post their sixth straight victory.
 
GAMEDAY CENTRAL
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Urbana struck first with a goal from Benjamin Cancian at 17:15 in the first half as Urbana opened up a 1-0 lead.
  • Urbana controlled the pace of play for the remainder of the half, but could not find the scoreboard and took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
  • The Golden Knights opened the second half with a scoring chance from redshirt-sophomore Austin Ludwik (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) that sailed wide.
  • Gannon recorded a pair of headers, coming from redshirt-sophomore Baran Kilic (Darmstadt, Germany/Bertolt-Brecht-Schule) and Ludwik, which nearly got Gannon on the board.
  • Sophomore Sam Thornton (Rotherham, England/Wickersley School and Sports College) tied the game at 1-1 with his eighth goal of the season with 11:35 remaining. Thornton took a pass from Tyler Martin (Cambridge, Ontario/Monsignor Doyle) up the middle of the field and fired off a quick shot that beat Urbana goalkeeper Jakob Henriksen.
  • The Golden Knights nearly found the go-ahead goal on two separate occasions, with a shot by Tyler Martin (Cambridge, Ontario/Monsignor Doyle) (8:37) that was blocked and an attempt from freshman Abdullah Say (Ruesselsheim, Germany) that went high.
  • Tyler Martin (Cambridge, Ontario/Monsignor Doyle) eventually handed Gannon the game-winning goal after corralling a bouncing ball from a corner kick by redshirt-senior Srdjan Dujkovic (Darmstadt, Germany/) to put Gannon ahead 2-1.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Eduardo de Bonis Encinoso (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain/Escuelas Pias Tenerife) led the Golden Knights with three shots.
  • The Blue Knights held a 9-3 advantage in shots in the first half, but Gannon countered with a 10-0 edge in second half shots.
  • Gannon held a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Golden Knights also held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Junior goalkeeper Hedi Mehnauoi made two saves for Gannon in the win.
