No. 21 Gannon Women’s Volleyball Outlasts Clarion in Five-Set Clash Friday Night

  • The Short Story: Gannon women's volleyball won its fourth match in a row with a resilient 3-2 road victory over Clarion Friday night. Three players put down double-digit kills for Gannon, which played its first five-set contest of the 2018 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After an even start to the first set, junior Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) put down a kill as Gannon led 6-5.
  • Gannon pulled ahead 10-5 in the first set after a pair of kills from freshman Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and a kill from sophomore Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran).
  • Clarion closed the gap to take an 18-7 lead in the first set before eventually taking the first set 25-22.
  • Gannon responded in resounding fashion with a 25-11 win in set two, the most lopsided set of the night.
  • The Lady Knights used runs of five straight points and nine straight points to take control of the second set.
  • Clarion countered with a 25-17 victory in the third set.
  • The Lady Knights rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the fourth set with nine consecutive points, highlighted by kills from Kerestes and Smith, for an 11-7 lead.
  • A quick 4-0 run handed Gannon a 20-14 lead in the fourth set.
  • Smith closed the fourth set with a kill off a set from sophomore Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) as Gannon tied the match at 2-2.
  • Gannon opened the match-deciding fifth set with a 3-1 lead after kills from sophomore Aubree Lanman (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights) and Beyers in addition to a service ace from Beyers.
  • The Lady Knights closed the fifth set with the final seven points for a 15-10 victory.
 
GAME NOTES
  • McClung (15 kills), Sampson (15 kills) and Smith (11 kills) led the Gannon offensive charge.
  • Beyers handed out 34 assists for the Lady Knights.
  • McClung and Kerestes added eight block assists each for Gannon.
  • Sampson led the team with 21 digs, while junior Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) added 20.
  • The first set featured eight ties and four lead changes.
  • The Lady Knights scored the final nine points of the second set and 11 of the last 12.
  • Gannon out-hit Clarion by a .189 to .077 margin.
  • The Lady Knights assisted on 56 of 59 total kills.

  • Tonight's match marks Gannon's first five-set contest of the season. Gannon's last five-set match came on November 11, 2017 at home against Edinboro.
