  • The Short Story: The 21st-ranked Gannon Lady Knights volleyball team concluded its weekend road-trip with a 3-0 victory against IUP Saturday afternoon. Gannon has won six straight matches in addition to posting its 12th sweep of 2018.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Back-to-back kills from freshman Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) helped Gannon jump out to a 6-3 lead in the first set.
  • Senior Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha) put down a kill as Gannon led 11-8 in the first set.
  • Three straight points for the Lady Knights put them up 15-9 in the first set.
  • Freshman Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) notched back-to-back kills as Gannon took the first set by a score of 25-19.
  • After an even start to the second set Gannon rattled off three points in a row for a 9-6 edge.
  • Junior Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) recorded a service ace as Gannon led 13-9 in set two.  
  • Sampson recorded pair of kills and sophomore Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) notched an ace to put the Lady Knights in front, 21-13, in the second set.
  • Sophomore Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) closed the second set with a kill.
  • Gannon posted four consecutive points to take a 9-5 lead in the third set.
  • Kills from junior Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and Sampson put the Lady Knights in front 11-9.
  • Gannon rolled to seven straight points with three of them coming off aces from Beyers.
  • The Lady Knights scored the final three points of the match to take the third set by a score of 25-20.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Sampson (12 kills) and Smith (10 kills) led the Lady Knight offense.
  • McClung (8 kills) and Kerestes (7 kills) were also among the key offensive leaders in the match.
  • Gannon hit .288 overall for the match.
  • The Lady Knights assisted on 46 of 47 kills. Beyers handed out 40 of those assists.
  • Beyers also added a game-high five service aces for Gannon. The Lady Knights held a 7-2 advantage over the Crimson Hawks in service aces.
  • Leitush led the team with 13 digs while Sampson added 12.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon extends its all-time lead in the series with IUP to 37-10 overall.
  • The Lady Knights have posted 12 sweeps in 16 matches this season.
  • IUP went 25-10 last season and made an appearance in the 2017 NCAA DII Atlantic Region Championships.
  • Smith has posted double-digit kills in back-to-back matches. She started the season with double-digit kills in six of the first seven matches of the season.
