Gannon Men’s Soccer Continues Stellar Play with 2-0 Shutout Win Over California (Pa.)

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Gannon 2, California (Pa.) 0
  • Records: Gannon (5-3, 5-0 PSAC) | California (Pa.) (1-3-3, 0-3-0 PSAC)
  • Location: Erie, Pa. – McConnell Family Stadium
  • The Short Story – Sophomore forward Sam Thornton (Rotherham, England/Wickersley School and Sports College) and freshman forward Joe Knox (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) each scored for Gannon while junior goalkeeper Hedi Mehnaoui (Paris, France/Lycee Chevrollier) kept the California (Pa.) offense at bay in a 2-0 shutout win in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play Wednesday night at McConnell Family Stadium. The Golden Knights have won now five straight games via shutout.

GAMEDAY CENTRAL
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon came out of the gates aggressive with a goal just over five minutes into the match. Thornton raced up the middle to receive a long stretch pass that split the Vulcan defense from redshirt-sophomore Austin Ludwik (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) and beat California goalie Lucas Exner to hand Gannon a quick 1-0 lead.
  • Mehnaoui denied a header from California's Eric Campbell at 36:56 and Gannon responded with three more shots of its own in the first half. Sophomore Cameron Alexander (Aberlady, Scotland/North Berwick) put a ball on frame at 33:50 followed by shots from Thornton (30:47) and a tremendous opportunity from redshirt-senior Srdjan Dujkovic (Darmstadt, Germany/) at 28:48 that rang off the crossbar.
  • The Golden Knights continued to pepper Exner with four more shots in the first half before taking a 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission.
  • Knox entered the game for a hobbled Alexander at 30:12 and made good on his appearance off the bench with a goal at 29:39 to put Gannon ahead 2-0. Knox finished a pass from redshirt sophomore Baran Kilic (Darmstadt, Germany/Bertolt-Brecht-Schule), who jolted up the right side of the field before dishing off his fourth assists of the season.
  • Cal had one final flurry of chances in the second half but had two shot attempts blocked and its final chance saved by Mehnaoui.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon remains the only PSAC team unbeaten in conference play. No other team has more than two wins since beginning conference action.
  • The Golden Knights held a 16-7 edge in shots and a 8-2 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Gannon doubled up Cal in corner kicks, holding an 8-4 advantage in the match.
  • Knox registered the first goal of his college career with a chance immediately off the bench.
  • Redshirt-junior Declan Bingham (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) (66:25) and Knox (87:43) each received yellow cards in the match.
