Gannon Men’s Soccer Rolls to 4-0 Shutout Win Over SRU on Sunday

THE RUNDOWN

  • Records: Gannon (4-3, 4-0 PSAC) | Slippery Rock (3-4-1, 1-1-0 PSAC)
  • Location: Erie, Pa. – McConnell Family Stadium
  • The Short Story – Gannon men's soccer scored a pair of goals in each half and picked up its fourth straight shutout victory with a 4-0 triumph over Slippery Rock on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore forward Sam Thornton (Rotherham, England/Wickersley School and Sports College) scored twice for Gannon to collect his fifth and sixth goals of 2018.

GAMEDAY CENTRAL
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon wasted little time recording the first goal of the match as Thornton struck for his fifth goal of the season at 37:38. Thornton took a perfectly-placed ball from redshirt-sophomore Baran Kilic (Darmstadt, Germany/Bertolt-Brecht-Schule) and beat Slippery Rock goalie Matt Hunsberger in the top left corner of the net.
  • Kilic had a scoring opportunity less than four minutes later for the Golden Knights that was eventually saved.
  • Thornton outraced the Slippery Rock defense for his second goal of the match at 15:38 in the first half as Gannon took a 2-0 lead. Kilic chipped a ball up the middle of the field and found a streaking Thornton for his second assist of the match.
  • Gannon opened the second half much like the first, scoring a goal less than five minutes into play. Freshman Abdullah Say (Ruesselsheim, Germany) recorded the goal off a long pass across the box from senior Tyler Martin (Cambridge, Ontario/Monsignor Doyle) as Gannon led 3-0.
  • Slippery Rock responded with a flurry of chances, all of which were saved by junior goalkeeper Hedi Mehnaoui (Paris, France/Lycee Chevrollier).
  • Junior Ben Andrews (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) handed Gannon a 4-0 lead with his first goal of the season off a pass from freshman Kevin Lemin (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls).
