  • The Short Story: The 22nd-ranked Gannon Lady Knights volleyball had three players with 10 or more kills in its 3-1 victory against previously unbeaten West Chester Saturday afternoon at the Hammermill center. The Lady Knights fought back for an extended 26-24 set victory in the first set before narrowly dropping the second set 25-23. Gannon eventually took control of the match with a 25-19 victory in set three and a 25-20 match-clinching set four win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a back-and-forth beginning to the first set, West Chester pulled ahead 18-11.
  • Gannon scored seven consecutive points that included three service aces from junior Lydia Lukomski (Portville, N.Y./Portville Central).
  • A kill from Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) sparked a four-point run for Gannon in the first set, allowing the Lady Knights to close the opening set with a 26-24 win.
  • Kills from sophomore Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran), junior Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and sophomore Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) put the Lady Knights up 6-4 in the second set.
  • Gannon followed it up with four of the next five points for a 10-5 edge in the second set.
  • West Chester responded with six consecutive points for a 20-17 lead in the second set before holding off a late Gannon rally in a 25-23 set victory.
  • A Kerestes kill handed Gannon a 7-3 lead in the third set.
  • Senior Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha) put down a kill as Gannon pulled ahead 15-13 in the third set.
  • Three straight attack errors from West Chester helped Gannon expand its third set lead to 18-14.
  • The Lady Knights scored six of the final seven points in the set for a 25-19 triumph in set three. Sophomore Johanna Gregory (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) produced a pair of kills and Beyers recorded two service aces in the latter stages of the set.
  • Gannon wasted little time taking control of the match-deciding fourth set with a quick 6-0 lead.
  • Four straight points pushed the Lady Knights lead to 13-8.
  • Back-to-back kills from Kerestes and freshman Sampson extended the Gannon lead to 24-18 before the Lady Knights won the set 25-20.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon was balanced offensively. McClung (12), Samspon (11) and Kerestes (10) all had double-digit kills for the Lady Knights while Johnson (9) and Smith (8) also helped chip in offensively.
  • The Lady Knights out-hit the Golden Rams in all three sets and held a .207-.091 edge for the match.
  • In addition to her 10 kills, Kerestes was a force at the net with eight block assists.
  • Beyers tied a season-high 42 assists.
  • Junior Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) led the Lady Knights with 26 digs while Smith had 21.
  • Gannon had eight service aces in the match.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon has won 17 straight matches against West Chester and are undefeated against the Golden Rams in the all-time series.
  • The Lady Knights have dropped just six sets this season.
  • West Chester had its 14-match winning streak snapped with the loss.
