  • The Short Story: The 22nd-ranked Gannon Lady Knights volleyball team returned home in style with a 3-0 sweep of Millersville on Friday night in front of a raucous Hammermill Center crowd. The win sets up a big early season test with undefeated West Chester tomorrow afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon scored three straight points, highlighted by kills from Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) and Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder), to take an 8-6 lead in the opening set.
  • Gannon scored six of seven points in the first set to hold a 15-10 edge.
  • The Lady Knight lead swelled to 21-14 in the first set with a kill from Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland).
  • Gannon closed the first set with a kill from Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha) and a pair of aces from Smith for a 25-20 victory.
  • Gannon recorded six aces in the second set, with three coming from Smith.
  • Back-to-back kills for Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) handed Gannon a 17-11 lead in the second set.
  • Johnson and Smith put down the final two kills for Gannon in the second set for a 25-19 set win.
  • Gannon opened the third set in a flurry for a quick 7-0 lead.
  • Two service aces from Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) and a kill from Kerestes extended the Lady Knights lead to 12-3 in the third set.
  • Gannon used a 5-0 spurt to take a commanding 24-12 lead in the third set before Kerestes ended the night with a kill.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon hit .333 as a team in the final set and .267 for the match.
  • The Lady Knights have strung together a pair of victories following their first loss of 2018.
  • McClung led all players with a game-high 11 kills.
  • Smith set a new career-high with five aces in the match. Her previous career-high was four aces against Cheyney on November 4, 2016.
  • Beyers handed out 28 assists for Gannon while Leitshuh led the team with 18 digs.
