HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon got things rolling early with a goal from Thornton just over five minutes into the conference matchup. Thornton took a long chip from redshirt-junior Declan Bingham (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) and raced up the right side before beating Mountain Cat goalkeeper Jonathan Reboton to give Gannon the early advantage
  • Senior Tyler Martin (Cambridge, Ontario/Monsignor Doyle) scored the Golden Knights second goal off a cross from Bingham.
  • Thornton capped the first half scoring with his second goal of the match as Gannon led 3-0 at intermission.
  • Freshman Martin Nord-Varhaug Aanestad capped the scoring with a rebound chance off a Gannon corner attempt.
  • Juniors Hedi Mehnaoui (Paris, France/Lycee Chevrollier) and Georgios Zarzavatsidis (Thessaloniki, Greece/Aristoteleio College) each played a half in net for Gannon in the Golden Knights' first shutout of the season.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon led the Mountain Cats in shots (22-1), shots on goal (11-0) and corners (11-0).
  • Bingham handed out assists on the first two goals while junior Chad Barrick (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) and sophomore Scott Wilson (Ladybank, Scotland/Bell Baxter) assisted on Gannon's last two goals of the evening.
  • Gannon applied constant pressure offensively, but also shut down UPJ's offensive attack. The Mountain Cats registered their first shot of the game nearly 30 minutes into the second half.
  • Sophomore Cameron Alexander (Aberlady, Scotland/North Berwick) and freshman Joe Knox (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) also had chances for the Golden knights late in the second half.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon remains undefeated against Pitt-Johnstown, holding a 6-0 lead in the all-time series.
  • Wednesday night was nearly perfect for soccer at McConnell Family Stadium with a light breeze and temperatures in the low 70s.
  • Thornton has launched 13 shots over the last two matches.
  • Tonight's four-goal outburst doubles what the Golden Knights have scored all season entering the match.
