Gannon Men's Soccer Drops 3-2 Decision to Daemen

  • The Short Story: Sophomore midfielder Cameron Alexander (Aberlady, Scotland/North Berwick) scored the first collegiate goal of his career in the 89th minute to bring Gannon to within one, but the Golden Knights ran out of time in search of the equalizer as Daemen College (N.Y.) held on for a 3-2 victory in nonconference action on Monday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon was the more dangerous team offensively in a scoreless first half with a 7-5 edge in shots. Three of the Golden Knights chances were on goal.
  • Each team continued to tack on the scoring chances as the match wore on, combining for five second half goals.
  • Daemen struck first for a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute on a goal from Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin despite Gannon's strong work rate and possession time.
  • Gannon countered quickly to tie the match at one with a goal from senior Eduardo de Bonis Encinoso (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain/Escuelas Pias Tenerife) in the 54th minute.
  • Giacomo Bacigalupo answered for Daemen with a free kick goal in the 56th minute to give the Wildcats a 2-1 edge. Bohlin followed it up with his second goal of the night in the 73rd minute to put the hosts up 3-1. 
  • Alexander chipped in a set piece from senior Tyler Martin (Cambridge, Ontario/Monsignor Doyle) at 88:38 to bring the Golden Knights to within 3-2.  
 
GAME NOTES
  • Sophomore forward Sam Thornton (Rotherham, England/Wickersley School and Sports College) fired three of Gannon's first four shots in the opening half, all of which were saved by Wildcats goalie Philipp Schmidt.
  • Gannon had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
  • Encinoso's tally from about 20 yards out was the first goal of the 2018 season for the Golden Knights.
  • Redshirt-sophomore midfielder Baran Kilic (Darmstadt, Germany/Bertolt-Brecht-Schule) created a chance less than a minute after Daemen's second goal that was ultimately saved by Schmidt.
  • The Golden Knights were whistled for 18 fouls.
  • Junior goalkeeper Hedi Mehnaoui (Paris, France/Lycee Chevrollier) made one save for Gannon.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Persistent rain forced a change in the time and location of tonight's non-conference match, which was played at Williamsville South HS Stadium.
  • Daemen snapped a three-match losing streak against the Golden Knights with a win. Gannon holds a 6-2 edge in the all-time series.
  • Thornton led the team with seven shots in his first action with the Golden Knights.  
  • With three yellow cards tonight, Gannon has amassed seven this season.
  • Gannon's nine shots on frame are the most in 2018.
