#13 Gannon Women’s Volleyball Remains Unbeaten with Sweep of Ursuline and Ohio Dominican; Smith Named Tournament Co-MVP

  • The Short Story: The 13th-ranked Gannon women's volleyball team continued to impress and remain unbeaten with two more sweeps to conclude play in the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament at Clarion. Gannon made short work of Ursuline and Ohio Dominican on Saturday and landed two players on the all-tournament team. Junior Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) was named the Co-MVP while sophomore Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) also landed on the all-tournament team.

  • "I think we all feel pretty good about our play this weekend.  We continue to make incremental improvements.  We were much better on offense today, and we saw continuity with every lineup we used."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon used multiple players to fuel its offensive attack. Five different players (Smith, Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson), Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington), Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) and Beyers) collected five kills or more in the match.
  • The Lady Knights used a four-point spurt in the first set to take an 11-8 lead. Smith, McClung and Sampson all notched kills in the scoring outburst.
  • Gannon collected the final four points of the first set for a 25-18 set victory.
  • Gannon used scoring runs of four and five points in the second set to take a commanding 2-0 match lead with a 25-17 set win.
  • Smith smacked a pair of kills and Beyers collected the final kill in the third set to hand Gannon a 25-14 set win.
 
GAME NOTES
  • The Lady Knights hit a season-high .424 for the match (48 kills on 99 total attempts). It's their highest hitting percentage in a match since November 12, 2016 against Edinboro.
  • Smith once again led the Lady Knights in kills with 13 while Beyers handed out 36 assists.
  • Gannon had a scoring run of at least four points in all four sets.
  • Sampson added 11 kills for the Lady Knights.
  • Gannon hit .483 in the first set and .486 in the final set, while Ursuline hit .125 and .200 in the first and third sets, respectively.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • In addition to her Co-MVP award tonight, Smith was named the MVP of the Daemen Volleyball Classic on August 25.
  • Gannon committed just six errors in the match. The team has committed single-digit errors in two of the past four matches.
  • The Lady Knights had 43 assists in the opening match of the day, the most this season since the team's opener against Lake Erie on August 24.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon continued its domination to begin the 2018 season with 40 assists on 44 kills.
  • The Lady Knights held strong to win the first set (25-20) despite seven ties and two lead changes.
  • The rest of the match saw just five ties and three lead changes as Gannon began to take control.
  • Gannon doubled up the Panthers at 14-7 and 18-9 in the second set.
  • Sophomore Laura Bebinger (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) smacked the final kill in the third set to hand Gannon the win.
 
GAME NOTES
  • McClung, Beyers and freshman Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute) posted four kills each.
  • Beyers dished out 40 of the team's 44 assists in the match.
  • Sampson and sophomore Aubree Lanman (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights) chipped in a combined 15 kills.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • At 7-0 overall, Gannon is off to its best start since 2016 when the team opened the year with 10 consecutive victories.
  • Smith led Gannon in kills once again with 11. She has posted 10+ kills in each of her last five matches and in six out of seven to start the season.
  • Gannon has swept the past six matches.
 
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM:
  • Smith was named the Co-MVP of the tournament along with Clarion's Julia Holden. Smith had 47 kills, 33 digs and four aces in the four matches of the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament.  
  • Beyers joined Smith with a spot on the all-tournament team. She posted 13 kills with nine aces and 26 digs.
  • The all-tournament team also included Leah Vensel (Clarion), Alexi Pranckus (Concord), Autumn Foust (Cedarville), Jayci Suseland (Millersville), Rebecca Skidmore (Ohio Dominican) and Vikki Henderson (Ursuline).
 
UP NEXT
  • Gannon continues its early season road swing on Thursday, September 6 against UVA Wise in the Concord Classic before facing Concord later in the day.
  • Match times are slated for 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
