#13 Gannon Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Cedarville and Concord Friday

  • The Short Story: The 13th-ranked Gannon Lady Knights volleyball team started the day with a 3-0 sweep of Cedarville and followed it up with an impressive 3-0 sweep of Concord in the nightcap of the Tony Banner Invitational at Clarion University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon picked up right where it left off last weekend with a 3-0 sweep of the Cedarville Lady Jackets on Friday morning in the Tony Banner Invitational at Clarion.
  • The Lady Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a kill from junior Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and a service ace from sophomore Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland).
  • Beyers and sophomore Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) reeled off back-to-back kills to give Gannon an 11-8 lead in the first set.
  • Gannon used a 6-1 run in the first set to take a 23-17 lead.
  • The first set was back-and-forth between the two squads before Gannon eventually pulled away for a 25-21 set victory.
  • The Lady Knights trailed throughout the second set and took its first lead at 16-15.
  • Gannon scored six of the final seven points in the second set for a 25-22 victory.
  • Trailing 5-3 in the third set, Gannon rallied for a 13-9 lead before securing the sweep with a 25-19 set victory.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Smith continued her stellar start to the 2018 season with 13 kills and seven digs.
  • Gannon held the edge in nearly every statistical category, including kills (39-30), aces (9-4), blocks (8-7), assists (36-29) and digs (51-46).
  • The Lady Knights used a balanced attack in the sweep. Aubree Lanman (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights), Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson), Johanna Gregory (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) and Kerestes all had six kills each.
  • Kerestes hit a sizzling .444 after smacking six kills on nine total attacks.
  • Beyers and freshman Valeria Torres (Gurabo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) each posted a game-high three aces.
  • Gannon limited Cedarville to a .063 hitting percentage as a team.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon picked up its third sweep of the season in four matches.
  • Smith has notched double-digit kills in three of the Lady Knights four matches this season.
  • Gannon's nine service aces are the most this season since its opener against Lake Erie.
  • Cedarville was swept for the third time this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon rolled to a 25-14 victory in the first set. The Lady Knights never trailed and opened up a 5-0 edge to begin the second match of the day.
  • The Lady Knights continued to roll with dominant set wins of 25-13 and 25-12 to complete the sweep.
  • Gannon hit above .300 in the final two sets of the evening, while Concord hit .071 and -.091, respectively, in the second and third sets.

GAME NOTES
  • The Lady Knights were firing on all cylinders, collecting 41 assists on 43 kills.
  • Gannon won decisively in the nightcap, which featured just two ties and two lead changes.
  • The Lady Knights had just nine attack errors, their lowest total of the season.
  • Smith had a game-high 10 kills for Gannon, while Sampson and freshman Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) had six kills each.
  • McClung posted a game-high six blocks and four aces.
  • Junior Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) had 15 digs to lead the Lady Knights.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon has won four-straight matches, all coming by sweep.
  • The last time Gannon had nine attack errors or fewer was on November 7, 2017 against Mercyhurst.
  • Gannon has lost just one match set so far in 2018.The Lady knights have won the past 15 match sets.
