  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's soccer team shut out Clarion, 3-0, Thursday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium in the 2018 opener. Three Lady Knights recorded goals as Gannon was victorious in the season-opener for the second straight year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon struck first in the 13th minute when Nicole Felice (Cleveland, Ohio/Laurel School) headed in a corner kick from Kayla Bevacqua (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame).
  • Emily Cekella (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) extended Gannon's lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute when she found the back of the net on a penalty kick following a foul inside the box.
  • Taylor Lewis (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) made it 3-0 in the 76th minute on a long ball played ahead by Bevacqua.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Three different players scored goals for the Lady Knights: Felice, Cekella and Lewis.
  • Bevacqua finished with two assists.
  • Gannon out-shot Clarion, 19-6.
  • Gannon recorded 11 corner kicks, while Clarion had two.
  • Hannah Pufpaff (Buffalo, N.Y./Saint Mary's) earned the first win of her career in goal. She made one save in 79 minutes of action.
  • Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic) played the remaining 11 minutes in goal. She made two saves in her debut.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon was tabbed fourth in the PSAC Preseason Coaches Poll, while Clarion was picked 12th.
  • Gannon won the season-opener against Clarion for the second straight year. Cekella scored the game-winner against Clarion last year on Aug. 31, 2017 in double overtime.
  • With the 26th goal of her career, Lewis moved into a tie with Joy Pelger (1998-01) for the fourth-most points in program history (62). She is also ranked fourth in career goals.
  • Felice notched the ninth goal of her career, which is tied for 25th in program history with Breanna Radin (2007-09), Brianna Sinon (1996-97) and Anna Rottino (1993-96).
  • Cekella's goal was the eighth of her career, which is tied for 29th in program history with Bethany Tagg (1997-00), Julie Stazer (1995-97) and Ellen McCarthy (1988-91).
  • Thursday marked the first multi-assist game of Bevacqua's career.
