Gannon Softball Wins Sixth Straight in Doubleheader Sweep of Slippery Rock

  • The Short Story: The Gannon softball team extended its win streak to six games Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division action.
 
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER  
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • Slippery Rock scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first, but The Lady Knights tied it up in the bottom of the second when Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) hit a two-run bomb to left field. Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) found the fence two at-bats later with a solo shot to left center.
  • In the third inning, SRU's Megan Brown tied it up when she scored Emily Nagle from third on a single up the middle. Kailey Myers put The Rock up one run, 4-3, with an RBI double to left center.
  • Lyndsey Lakatos (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler Area) gave the Lady Knights the lead for good in the fifth inning with a pinch-hit grand slam to left center, scoring Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), Nicole Bush (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe).
 
GAME NOTES – GAME ONE
  • Lakatos led Gannon with four RBI, while Taliani had two.
  • Lakatos' home run is the first of her career. 
  • Slippery Rock out-hit Gannon, 10-6.
  • Six different batters had hits for the Lady Knights.
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) struck out three in her seventh win of the season, which is the third most among PSAC pitchers.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • The Rock took a one-run lead in the second inning when Lauren Hawley scored from third on an error.
  • In her first career at-bat, starting pitcher Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) crushed a two-run homer to right center in the second inning. Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) drove in Perich and Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) with a double to right center and Stocker capped a five-run inning with an infield ground-out that scored Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep).
  • With two outs in the fourth, Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) smacked a three-run double to right center to give Gannon an 8-1 lead.
  • Slippery Rock got one run back in the seventh when Alexa Guglielmino scored McKenzie Garland on a RBI double to center field.
 
GAME NOTES – GAME TWO
  • Kr. DeMatteis led Gannon with three RBI.
  • Ingerick and Ke. DeMatteis had two RBI apiece.
  • Gannon out-hit Slippery Rock, 8-6.
  • Perich had a team-high two hits and two runs.
  • Ke DeMatteis had five strikeouts in her fifth win of the season. 
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • All seven of Gannon's runs in game one came from home runs.
  • Gannon's three homers in game one matches a season-high.
  • Taliani and Szajn recorded home runs in back-to-back games. 
  • Gannon's 15 home runs this season ranks fourth in the PSAC.
  • The sweep of Slippery Rock stretched Gannon's win streak to six games.
  • Gannon also swept Mercyhurst and Seton Hill in PSAC West action last week.
  • Beining has not walked a batter in her last four appearances.
  • Stocker has a nine game on-base streak.
