Gannon Softball Scores Season-High 13 Runs in Game One, Lakatos Hits Go-Ahead Grand Slam in Game Two to Sweep Notre Dame (Ohio)

  • The Short Story: The Gannon softball team won its eighth straight game and claimed its fourth consecutive doubleheader Tuesday afternoon with a two-game sweep of Notre Dame (Ohio). Gannon erupted for a season high 13 runs in the 13-1 win against the Falcons in game one before freshman Lyndsey Lakatos (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler Area) hit her second go-ahead grand slam in three days to lead Gannon to a 5-3 victory in the nightcap.
 
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER  
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • After a scoreless first inning, Gannon went off for a season-high nine runs in the second inning.
  • Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) started the scoring drive when she smacked her third homer of the season, a two-run shot to right field. Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) followed three batters later with a two-run bomb, her second of the season, making it 4-0. Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) hit a three-run homer to center field, marking the third home run of the inning and her first of the season. In Taliani's second at-bat of the inning, she crushed her second homer of the game to center field, scoring a pair of runs to make it 9-0.  
  • Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) put the Lady Knights up 10-0 in the third with an RBI double to left field, scoring Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) from second base.
  • In the fourth inning, Wilp drove in Taliani on her fourth double of the season.
  • Gannon continued the scoring attack in the fifth when Ingerick hit her second home run of the game on a two-run shot to left field, bringing Gannon's lead to 13-0.
  • The Falcons plated one unearned run in the bottom of the fifth.

GAME NOTES – GAME ONE
  • Ingerick and Taliani finished the game with five and four RBI, respectfully.
  • Martinez and Taliani had a game-high three hits apiece.
  • Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Ingerick also registered multi-hit games.
  • Gannon out-hit Notre Dame, 15-3.
  • Perich picked up the win in the circle, her third of the season, while scattering just three hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • Gannon got out to a one-run lead in the second inning when Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) drove home Tanilli on a single to shortstop.
  • Notre Dame tied up the game in the fourth when Ariel Linberger scored Myranda Rowland on a single up the middle.
  • The hosts went up two runs in the bottom of the sixth on Linberger's two-run homer to center field.
  • With two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh inning, Lakatos crushed a go-ahead grand slam to left field, her second in three days. Lakatos has a team-high .875 slugging percentage. 

GAME NOTES – GAME TWO
  • Lakatos led Gannon with four RBI.
  • Ingerick recorded her second straight multi-hit game.
  • Gannon out-hit Notre Dame, 8-6.
  • Taliani had a stolen base.
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) fanned three batters in her eighth win of the season.

  • Gannon's five home runs in game one is a season-high. Gannon has not recorded five home runs in a single game since April 13, 2012 at Point Park.
  • The 13 runs scored in game one is a season-high.
  • As a team, Gannon has recorded at least one home run in each of the last seven games.
