Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Drops PSAC Decision at No. 12 West Chester

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The No. 21 West Chester women's lacrosse team used a 9-0 run to forge ahead 10-1 and never looked back en route to a 20-3 victory against Gannon Saturday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field. Junior Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) scored two of the Lady Knights' three goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two clubs split the opening two goals. After West Chester scored first, Bower responded with an unassisted tally to knot the match at one 1:48 into the contest.
  • West Chester followed with nine consecutive goals to take control at 10-1 midway through the first half.
  • Gannon ended the scoring run when Bower netted her second goal of the match at the 14:43 mark, finishing a pass from sophomore Erin Rotondo (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan).
  • However, the Golden Rams countered with four more scores to assume a 14-2 advantage at the intermission.
  • West Chester continued its run with two more goals after the break, capping a 6-0 blitz that spanned both halves to create a 16-2 lead.
  • Freshman Jayme Kostial (Pittsburgh, Pa./Moon Area) got Gannon on the board again with 14:19 remaining, scoring off another Rotondo assist.
  • West Chester then found the back of the net four more times, before securing a 20-3 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • The start time for Saturday's contest was moved up two hours to 11 a.m. due to inclement weather in the afternoon forecast.  
  • West Chester generated advantages in shots (37-6), ground balls (31-11), draw controls (15-9) and fewest turnovers (12-24).
  • The Lady Knights committed 13 fouls compared to the Golden Rams' 16. 
  • Bower scored two of Gannon's three goals in addition to two draw controls, two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
  • Kostial netted Gannon's final score.
  • Rotondo finished with two assists and two draw controls.
  • Junior Micaela Capozzo (Medford, Mass./Pinkerton Academy) topped Gannon in the circle with three draw controls.
  • Freshman Erin Renwick (Islip, N.Y./Islip) recorded 13 saves while playing all 60 minutes in goal, including nine stops during the first half. She also secured three ground balls.

  • West Chester is ranked 12th in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Top 25 Poll.
  • Bower netted multiple goals for the fourth time this season.
  • Rotondo dished out multiple assists for the second time during her career.
  • Renwick reached double digits in saves for the seventh consecutive match while securing at least three ground balls for the second time in 2018.
  • Sophomore Jessica Hudak (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-LaSalle) entered the match with two ground balls this season, before doubling her total.
  • Capozzo jumped Joanna Culkin (2004-07) and moved into 13th place all-time at Gannon since 2004 with 65 draw controls.
  • Bower became the 20th Lady Knight since 2004 to caused 40 turnovers during her career.
  • West Chester defeated Gannon for the 10th consecutive time overall and eighth straight time at home.
