Gannon Softball Sweeps Seton Hill in Pair of Come-From-Behind Wins

THE RUNDOWN
  • Game One Score: Gannon 10, Seton Hill 4

  • Location: Seton Hill Softball Complex – Greensburg, Pa.
  • The Short Story: The Gannon softball team swept Seton Hill Friday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division action. The Lady Knights rallied from a 3-0 deficit by plating eight runs in fourth inning to win game one, 10-4, before clawing back from a two-run deficit with eight unanswered runs to take the nightcap, 8-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • The Griffins jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning. Junior Brooke Bower stole home after leading off the inning with a single through the left side. Senior Ashley Perillo and junior Devyn Terry also provided RBI hits for Seton Hill.
  • Gannon exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning, sparked by sophomore Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills)'s two-out, two-run single to center field. Senior Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) kept the rally going with a three-run double to left center. Sophomore Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) scored Martinez the next at-bat with a double to centerfield. Freshman Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) capped the inning with a two-run homer to left, her fifth of the season, to make it 8-3.
  • In the fifth inning, rookie Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) crushed a home run to left center and junior Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) scored sophomore Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) on an infield ground-out to give Gannon a 10-3 lead.
  • Perillo singled to right center in the sixth, scoring sophomore Christiana Skrabak from second to make it 10-4.

GAME NOTES – GAME ONE
  • Martinez led Gannon with two hits and three RBI.
  • Stocker and Wilp recorded two hits and two RBI apiece.
  • Gannon out-hit Seton Hill, 11-9.
  • Sophomore pitcher Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) got her sixth win of the season. She struck out one batter in her seventh complete game.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • Like game one, Seton Hill got out to an early lead thanks to two runs in the first inning.
  • Gannon commenced its rally in the third inning with Szajn's solo home run to left field, her second of the season.  
  • The Lady Knights poured on four runs in the fourth, started by Stocker's solo homer to center field. Two at-bats later, sophomore Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) smacked a solo homer to left. Wilp drove in sophomore Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) on an infield ground-out. Junior Autumn Smith (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional), who got on base with her first double of the season, gave Gannon a 5-2 lead when she scored from third on a Seton Hill throwing error.
  • Taliani's single to center field in the fifth inning sent DeMatteis home and gave Gannon a four-run lead.
  • In the sixth, Martinez scored a pair of runs with a double to left center.

GAME NOTES – GAME TWO
  • Martinez and Taliani finished the game with two RBI apiece.
  • Kr. DeMatteis, Taliani, Szajn and Wilp finished with multi-hit games, each recording two.
  • Gannon out-hit the hosts, 11-6.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) picked up her fourth win of the season. She recorded one strike out in her fourth complete game.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon recorded 11 hits in both wins Friday.
  • Kr. DeMatteis' homer in game one was the first of her career.
  • Talianii's home run in game two was her first of the season.
  • Stocker has recorded at least one home run in the last three games to bring her total to six on the year. She leads the Lady Knights with a .886 slugging percentage and 20 RBI.
  • Stocker is on a seven-game hitting streak.
  • Szajn has reached base in nine straight games.
  • Beining has not walked a batter in her last three appearances.
