Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Falls in Foggy and Rainy Rivalry Match-Up

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: No. 19 Mercyhurst 19, at Gannon 6

  • The Short Story: The No. 19 Mercyhurst women's lacrosse team scored eight of the first nine goals and posted a 19-6 victory against Gannon Tuesday afternoon at a foggy and rainy McConnell Family Stadium. Sophomore Erin Rotondo (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) recorded her sixth hat trick of the season with three goals during the setback.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mercyhurst scored the first two goals, before Gannon netted its first tally seven minutes and 14 seconds into the contest. Rotondo produced the unassisted score, cutting the deficit in half.
  • The Lakers shook off the goal and ripped off six consecutive tallies to assume an 8-1 lead with 9:46 left in the first half.
  • Gannon countered with two of the final three first-half scores. Rotondo added a second goal off an assist from junior Caroline Mauck (Martinsville, Ind./Mooresville) and junior Micaela Capozzo (Medford, Mass./Pinkerton Academy) scored unassisted, slicing the deficit to 9-3 at the intermission.
  • Mercyhurst regained the momentum by scoring nine of the first 10 goals after the break.
  • Freshman Maddie Krock (Granville, Ohio/Granville) tallied the lone Gannon goal during the stretch, scoring unassisted at the 20:25 mark.
  • Gannon tried to rally with back-to-back scores from junior Alex Bower and Rotondo, but another Mercyhurst goal closed out the 19-6 victory with two seconds left.

GAME NOTES
  • Tuesday's contest was played under foggy conditions and a constant mist.  
  • Mercyhurst generated advantages in shots (36-23), ground balls (21-17), draw controls (16-10) and fewest turnovers (14-18).
  • The Lady Knights committed only 10 fouls compared to the Lakers' 17. 
  • Rotondo topped the Gannon scoring unit with three goals, four draw controls and three ground balls.
  • Capozzo, Bower and Krock added one score each.
  • Bower also produced a season-high four ground balls and two caused turnovers while Capozzo tied for the team-lead in ground balls (4).
  • Senior Jessica Lambert (Livonia, N.Y./Livonia) had three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
  • Freshman Erin Renwick (Islip, N.Y./Islip) recorded 11 saves while playing all 60 minutes in goal with almost an even split of six first-half stops and five second-half saves. She also secured two ground balls and caused one turnover.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Mercyhurst is ranked 19th in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Top 25 Poll.
  • Gannon played at home for the third time in 10 days after opening the campaign with three consecutive road matches.
  • Rotondo recorded her sixth hat trick of the season and seventh of her career.
  • Renwick reached double digits in saves for the sixth consecutive match.
  • Mercyhurst won for only the third time in 12 all-time appearances at McConnell Family Stadium, cutting its deficit in the all-time series to 15-10.
