  • The Short Story: The No. 7 Gannon women's water polo team suffered a 12-8 loss to No. 2 California State University of East Bay in the opening round of the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Conference Championships Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pioneers got out to a 5-2 lead in the first period, led by three goals from Adrien Van Dyke. Campbell Ruh (Walnut, Calif./Lutheran High School of Orange County) and Alison Cooney (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored individual goals for the Lady Knights.
  • Liz Barr (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani School) scored Gannon's lone goal in the second period. A pair of goals by Ivanna Anderson and one more from Van Dyke put Cal State East Bay up 8-3 at halftime.
  • Cooney and Sydney Fountain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) scored the first two goals of the second half to cut Gannon's deficit to 8-5. Gabriella Garcia gave the Pioneers a 9-5 lead after three periods with CSUEB's lone goal of the quarter.
  • Gannon and CSUEB played evenly in the fourth quarter, each team scoring three goals apiece. 
 
GAME NOTES
  • Cooney and Ruh finished with three goals each.
  • Ruh made a team-high four saves.
  • Isabelle Vieira (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) made seven saves and one steal in the cage.
  • Van Dyke led the Pioneers with five goals and three steals. Anderson had three goals, while Maci Taylor recorded a game-high three assists.
  • Cal State East Bay goalkeeper Makenna Nation made four saves and three steals.
  • CSUEB outshot Gannon 29-23.
