Rotondo, King and Martinelli Record Hat Tricks in Gannon Women's Lacrosse Setback at Millersville

  • The Short Story: The Millersville women's lacrosse team used an 8-0 first-half run to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 12-5 lead and earned a 26-15 victory against Gannon Saturday afternoon at Biemesderfer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon started the scoring with the match's first two goals off the sticks of sophomore Erin Rotondo (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) and junior Kat Martinelli (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern). Junior Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and sophomore Jessica Hudak (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-LaSalle) assisted on the scoring plays.
  • Millersville responded with four consecutive goals to forge ahead 4-2 with 18:15 left in the first half.
  • Gannon countered with its own run, scoring three straight times to assume a 5-4 advantage at the 16:23 mark. Senior Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) sandwiched a Rotondo goal with two unassisted tallies during the run. Junior Kayla Shields (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) assisted on the middle score.
  • Millersville then took control with eight consecutive goals while holding Gannon scoreless for nine minutes and 57 seconds.
  • The Lady Knights tried to offset the run with three of the final five goals of the first half. King's third score of the half cut the deficit to 14-8 at the break.
  • Gannon continued its strong play with the first three goals of the second half. Rotondo and Bower connected on free-position attempts, before King scored unassisted to draw within 14-11.
  • The Millersville lead stood at 16-13 after the two teams split the next four goals, but the Marauders accounted for 10 of the final 12 scores during the final 19 minutes and 25 seconds to post a 26-15 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Millersville controlled the statistical charts with advantages in shots (40-24), ground balls (17-12), draw controls (25-18) and fewest fouls (21-27).
  • Both teams committed 13 turnovers.
  • Rotondo and King scored 11 of Gannon's 15 goals. Rotondo finished with a career-high six goals, six draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • King added five goals, one assist, seven draw controls and two ground balls.
  • Martinelli produced a hat trick with three scores to go along with a pair of draw controls. Both marks tied career-highs.
