Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team's Upset Bid of Defending PSAC Champion East Stroudsburg Falls Short (Video)

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: No. 18 East Stroudsburg 14, at Gannon 7

  • The Short Story: The No. 18 East Stroudsburg women's lacrosse team led by only two at halftime against a high-energy Gannon squad before pulling away for a 14-7 victory Saturday afternoon at an extremely windy McConnell Family Stadium. The Warriors were the Lady Knights' fourth consecutive nationally-ranked opponent and fifth in the last seven matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams split the opening two goals with junior Kat Martinelli (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) tying the match at one with an unassisted score 4:13 into the contest.
  • East Stroudsburg followed with three consecutive tallies to pull ahead 4-1 with 12:34 left to play in the first half.
  • Gannon then ended a scoreless drought of 14 minutes and 40 seconds when sophomore Jessica Hudak (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-LaSalle) produced an unassisted goal.
  • The two squads split the final four scores of the half with Gannon answering each East Stroudsburg goal.
  • Sophomore Erin Rotondo (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) scored twice off assists from senior Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) and freshman Maddie Krock (Granville, Ohio/Granville) during the final eight minutes of the first half, leaving the Warriors with a 6-4 lead at the break.
  • East Stroudsburg came out of the warm locker room hot during the second half, ripping off seven consecutive goals to assume control at 13-4 with 10:14 remaining.
  • Gannon needed 21 minutes and 43 seconds to register a goal during the second half, getting an unassisted score from King at the 8:17 mark.
  • After East Stroudsburg added another goal, the Lady Knights completed the scoring with back-to-back tallies from Krock and junior Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) 41 seconds apart. King assisted on both goals.
  • Neither team managed another score during the final four minutes and 15 seconds, before the final horn signaled a 14-7 East Stroudsburg victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Saturday's contest was played in wind gusts between 30-35 miles per hour, a game time temperature in the 30's and a wind chill in the 20's.
  • The match was almost even on the statistical score sheet as both teams finished with the same shots (34-34) and turnovers (29).
  • Gannon generated advantages in ground balls (30-28), draw controls (13-10) and fewest fouls (7-17).
  • Rotondo was the only Lady Knight with multiple goals, scoring twice.
  • Hudak, Bower, King, Martinelli and Krock tallied one goal each.

  • Hudak and Bower also picked up three ground balls. It represented a career-high for Hudak.
  • Freshman Erin Renwick (Islip, N.Y./Islip) recorded 12 saves while playing all 60 minutes in goal for the 10th consecutive match. She turned away six shots during both halves.

  • ESU is the defending Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) champion.
