Gannon Softball Team Splits Doubleheader with Mercyhurst Saturday

  • The Short Story: The Gannon softball team split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division doubleheader with Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Knights dropped game one 2-0 before bouncing back with a 5-1 win in game two.
 
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER  
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • The Lakers scored the only runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Cassandra Egelston scored the first run on a wild pitch and Taylor Fry reached home on a Gannon fielding error to give Mercyhurst a final 2-0 lead.
  • The Lady Knights left two runners on base in four of the next six innings.
 
GAME NOTES – GAME ONE
  • Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) and Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) led Gannon with two hits apiece, while Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) had one.
  • Gannon out-hit Mercyhurst, 5-4.
  • Mercyhurst had two errors, while Gannon had one.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) was credited with the loss. She recorded four strikeouts in the circle.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) helped Gannon get out to a one-run lead in the second inning with an RBI infield ground-out.
  • In the fourth inning, Kr. DeMatteis scored Nicole Bush (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic), who pinch-hit for Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe), on a hard-hit RBI double to left field. Autumn Smith (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) drove home Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) on a grounder to second base to give Gannon a 3-0 lead.
  • With two outs in the fifth, Stocker scored Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) on a hit to the left side, stretching Gannon's lead to 4-0.
  • Mercyhurst's Sarah Koscho hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Taylor Fry to make it 4-1.
  • Ingerick scored Smith in the sixth inning with a double, her sixth of the season, to give Gannon a final 5-1 victory.
 
GAME NOTES – GAME TWO
  • Kr. DeMatteis led Gannon with two RBI, while Ingerick, Stocker and Smith had one apiece.
  • Stocker had a team-high three hits, while Ingerick had two.
  • Gannon out-hit Mercyhurst, 8-5.
  • Neither team recorded an error.
  • Ke. DeMatteis earned the win for the Lady Knights. She had three strikeouts.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Martinez is on a nine-game hit streak. She has also reached base safely in 10 consecutive games.
  • Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) has reached base in nine straight games.
