Gannon Softball Keeps Win-Streak Rolling; Collects Two-Game Sweep vs. Edinboro in Tenth-Straight Victory

  • The Short Story: The Gannon softball team stretched its win streak to 10 games on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division action. The Lady Knights cruised to a 12-3 win in game one before claiming an 11-3 game two victory in five innings.
 
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER  
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • The Fighting Scots got out to a one-run lead in the second inning when Jessica Little scored Roni Lipinski from second base on a single through the right side.
  • Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) tied it up in the fourth inning with an RBI single to right field. Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) put the Lady Knights up just two batters later with a two-run double to left.
  • Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) led the Lady Knights into a four-run fifth inning when she drove in Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) with a double to center field. Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau), Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) and Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) all recorded RBI hits to put Gannon up 7-1.
  • Edinboro got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth when Brittany Allen hit an RBI single to center field and Shannon Gilbert scored on a bases-loaded walk.
  • Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) kicked off a five-run seventh inning with an RBI double to left field, scoring Wilp from third base. Ingerick busted a three-run homer to center field the next at-bat to put Gannon up 11-3. Tanilli gave the Lady Knights one more run on an RBI to right field, scoring Taliani. ­
 
GAME NOTES – GAME ONE
  • Ingerick led Gannon with a home run, a double and five RBI. Her homer is her third one in three games.
  • Wilp had a team-high three runs and three hits, including two doubles.
  • Martinez, Taliani and Tanilli also had multi-hit games.
  • Gannon out-hit Edinboro, 15-5.
  • Edinboro committed four errors, while Gannon had one.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) earned the win for the Lady Knights. She recorded five strikeouts in her sixth win of the season.
  • Gannon has recorded at least one home run in each of the last eight games.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • Gannon jumped out to a two-run lead in the first inning when Taliani and Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) recorded RBIs.
  • The Fighting Scots got one run back in the bottom of the inning when Olivia Jankowski had an RBI double to center field.
  • In the second inning, Martinez scored Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) from second base on an RBI double to center. Martinez scored on an Edinboro fielding error and Tanilli scored on a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-1. Kr. DeMatteis drove home Ingerick on a single through the left side to give the Lady Knights a five-run lead after two innings of action.
  • Taliani scored a pair of runs in the third inning with her two-run double to right, her fifth double of the season.
  • Martinez drove another run home in the fourth inning with an infield ground-out, scoring Kr. DeMatteis. Tanilli recorded a pair of runs with a double to right field, giving Gannon an 11-1 edge.
  • Jankowski and Courtney Allen hit back-to-back RBI doubles to get two runs back for Edinboro in the fifth inning, but it was not enough as the seven-run rule ended the game in the fifth.
 
GAME NOTES – GAME TWO
  • Taliani's three RBI and two hits led Gannon.
  • Tanilli had a team-high three hits, while also scoring three runs.
  • Martinez, Kr. DeMatteis and Wilp also had multi-hit games.
  • Gannon out-hit Edinboro, 12-10.
  • Edinboro committed three errors, while Gannon had none.
  • Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) remained undefeated on the year as she moved to 4-0 in the circle. She recorded two strikeouts in her fourth complete game of the season.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Lady Knights' pitching unit owns a conference-best 2.01 ERA.
  • Gannon's 22 homers this season ranks second in the PSAC.
  • Martinez is on a seven-game hit streak. She has also reached base safely in eight consecutive games.
  • Gannon's 10 consecutive wins is the longest win-streak since ten years ago when the Lady Knights won 12-straight games from February 29-March 8, 2008.

  • The Lady Knights head to Mercyhurst Saturday, April 14 for a PSAC Western Division doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
