Gannon Softball Goes Undefeated on Day One of Salem Invite

THE RUNDOWN
  • Game One Score: Gannon 12, Salem 0 (5 Innings)

  • The Short Story: The Gannon softball team went undefeated on the opening day of the Salem Invitational Friday in Salem, Va. The Lady Knights cruised to a 12-0 shutout against Salem in five innings before defeating Chowan 7-3 in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • In the third inning, Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) scored Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) on an RBI single to left field. Perich smacked her first triple of the season to get on base at the start of the inning.
  • Gannon exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth, sparked by Perich's RBI single to right field. Martinez scored a pair on a single to left center, while Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) and Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) recorded RBI hits to give Gannon a 6-0 lead.
  • The Lady Knights added to their lead in the fifth inning with six runs. Martinez reached base on a fielder's choice, scoring Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) from third base. Another fielder's choice and fielding error on Ingerick's hit scored Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) from third. Kherrin Morgan (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) scored Perich from third with a hit to left center and Martinez tacked on another run on a fielding error that occurred on the hit. Ashley Bower (Middleport, N.Y./Royalton-Hartland) and Ingerick added two more runs to cap the six-run inning, the second-most runs scored in a single inning this season.  

GAME NOTES
  • Martinez finished the game with four RBI. Stocker also scored a pair of runners.
  • Perich, Martinez and Tanilli each tallied two hits.
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) (4-3) pitched her third shutout of the season. She recorded five strikeouts in the complete game.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Martinez's four RBI is a season-high.
  • Beining fanned a season-high five batters in the win.
  • Gannon's 12 runs is a season-best. It is the most scored by Gannon since a 13-2 win against Glenville State on March 12, 2016.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • Morgan put Gannon on the board in the first inning with a single to right field, scoring Perich from third base.
  • The Lady Knights added to their lead in the third inning with Ingerick's sacrifice fly to center field. Chowan tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 2-1.
  • With two outs in the fourth, Gannon scored three runs; two on Martinez's two-run double to left center and the other on a Chowan fielding error.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Chowan cut it to 5-3 with two runs.
  • Lyndsey Lakatos (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler Area) hit the first triple of her career in the seventh inning to score Stocker and Ingerick, giving Gannon a 7-3 win in game two.

GAME NOTES
  • Perich scored a game-high three runs, while also recording three hits.
  • Lakatos and Martinez wrapped up the game with two RBI apiece.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) (2-3) earned the win for the Lady Knights. She tallied six strikeouts.  
  • Perich came in during the final inning and fanned two.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Perich has reached base in all 13 games this season. She extended her hit streak to nine games Friday.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon continues action at the Salem Invitational Saturday against Shepherd (12 p.m.) and Winston-Salem State (4 p.m.).
  • The game against Wheeling Jesuit scheduled for Sunday, March 11 has been canceled due to poor weather in the forecast.
