Gannon Softball Dominates Winston-Salem State, 10-1; Loses Close Game to Shepherd, 3-2

  • The Short Story: The Gannon softball team concluded action at the Salem Invitational with a split on Saturday afternoon. Shepherd scored a walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Lady Knights 3-2, before Gannon cruised to a 10-1 win against Winston-Salem State in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • The Lady Knights got out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning of game one when Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) smacked a two-run double to left center, scoring Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Ashley Bower (Middleport, N.Y./Royalton-Hartland).
  • In the bottom of the inning, Shepherd's Morgan Cox scored Kaitlyn Konopka on an RBI single to left field to make it a 2-1 game.
  • The Rams tied things up in the sixth inning on a bases-loaded walk.
  • With one out in the seventh, Shepherd scored the game-winning run on Rachel Taylor's RBI single to left field.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Ingerick's two-run double led Gannon offensively.
  • Perich and Bower also registered individual hits and runs.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) took the loss after pitching the final 1.1 innings of the game.
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) got the start in the circle for the Lady Knights. She struck out one batter in five innings of work.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Ingerick's double was her second of the season, while her two RBI was a season-high.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • The Lady Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to a pair of bases-loaded walks. Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) scored Ingerick on an RBI single and Bower scored Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) on an infield fielder's choice.
  • Gannon had another four-run inning in the third, kicked off by Stocker's solo home run. Perich smacked a three-RBI double to cap the inning. Gannon led 8-0 after three innings.
  • WSSU's Tiarra Delaney scored Jasmine Holloman from second base on a RBI single.
  • In the bottom of the inning, Stocker hit her second homer of the game, this time a two-RBI shot to lead Gannon to a 10-1 win.

GAME NOTES
  • Stocker's two home runs and four RBI led Gannon.
  • Perich also recorded three RBI on her team-high seventh double of the season.
  • Perich (2-0) got the win in the circle. She matched a season-high six strikeouts in the victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Perich has reached base safely in 15 consecutive games. She extended her hit streak to 11 games Saturday.
  • Stocker has a team-high three home run and 13 RBI on the year. 
 
UP NEXT
  • The game against Wheeling Jesuit scheduled for Sunday, March 11 has been cancelled due to poor weather in the forecast.
  • The Lady Knights will be back in action Wednesday, March 14 against Lake Erie.
  • The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. at McConnell Family Stadium.
