Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Unable to Overcome Slow Start Against No. 23 Lock Haven in Home Opener (Video)

  • Final Score: No. 23 Lock Haven 15, Gannon 8

  • Location: Erie, Pa. - McConnell Family Stadium
  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's lacrosse team played No. 23 Lock Haven even for the final 50 minutes during Saturday's home opener. However, the Bald Eagles' six goals during opening eight minutes proved to be the difference in a 15-8 victory against the Lady Knights at a sunny but cold McConnell Family Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lock Haven began the match in its highest gear, exploding for six goals during the opening seven minutes and 50 seconds.
  • The Bald Eagles scored on their first three attempts and out-shot the Lady Knights 10-1 during the opening blitz.
  • Gannon was able to stop the momentum after Lock Haven's sixth goal. The home squad got three consecutive shots off before sophomore Erin Rotondo (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) found the back of the net with 18:18 remaining in the first half.
  • The Lady Knights out-scored the Bald Eagles 3-2 during the final 18:18 of the first half, adding scores from junior Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and freshman Jayme Kostial (Pittsburgh, Pa./Moon Area). The end result was an 8-3 Lock Haven advantage at the intermission.
  • The two programs split the first four scores of the second half, before Lock Haven put the match away. The Bald Eagles ripped off five straight goals to assume a 15-5 lead with 6:09 to play.
  • Gannon continued to fight and scored three times during the final three minutes and 47 seconds, but remained short 15-8 when the final horn sounded.
  • Junior Caroline Mauck (Martinsville, Ind./Mooresville), junior Micaela Capozzo (Medford, Mass./Pinkerton Academy) and Rotondo produced the final three goals.

GAME NOTES
  • Saturday's contest represented Gannon's 2018 home opener.
  • The contest was played under sunny skies, but with a game time temperature of 32 degrees and wind chills in the 20's.  
  • Gannon generated advantages in shots (38-33), ground balls (23-14) and fewest turnovers (12-19).
  • Lock Haven countered with better numbers in draw controls (16-9) and fewest fouls (9-10). 
  • Rotondo led Gannon in the scoring column with three goals and a pair of ground balls.
  • King followed with one goal, four assists, nine ground balls, five caused turnovers and three draw controls.
  • Mauck, Capozzo, Bower and Kostial chipped in one score each.
  • In addition to her goal, Capozzo had four ground balls and won four draw controls.
  • Senior Jessica Lambert (Livonia, N.Y./Livonia) finished with a career-high three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
  • Freshman Erin Renwick (Islip, N.Y./Islip) made 11 saves while playing all 60 minutes in goal.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Saturday's contest was Gannon's first at home after a season-opening three-match road swing.
  • The Lady Knights were scheduled to play their first four matches away from home, but Wednesday's non-conference contest at Wheeling Jesuit was postponed due to inclement weather and field conditions.
  • King set a career-high in ground balls, tied her career-high in caused turnovers and had a season-high in assists.
  • Rotondo has scored at least three goals during every match this season, increasing her total of career hat tricks to five.
  • Renwick reached double digits in saves for the third consecutive match.
  • Gannon caused 15 turnovers, representing its most since creating 16 during a 9-8 victory against Shippensburg on April 8, 2017 at McConnell Family Stadium.
  • King moved into ninth place all-time at Gannon with her 90th career assist. She jumped over Caitlyn Fisher (2010-13) and Shannon Pagano (2004-07) during Saturday's match.
