Gannon Softball Nipped in Pair of One-Run Games on Thursday in Clermont, Fla.

  • The Short Story: Gannon Softball dropped a pair of one-run games on Thursday, March 1, in Clermont, Fla. Five of the last six games the Lady Knights have played in have been decided by one run.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Gannon got on the board first in the 2nd inning. Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) hit a ball back to the pitcher who threw it away. Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) came in to score and Gannon led, 1-0.
  • Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) added to the Lady Knight lead in the fourth inning, singling to right field, allowing Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) to scamper home. Gannon extended its led to 2-0.
  • Cleary did damage in the fourth inning with four runs, jumping ahead, 4-2.
  • Gannon was down to its final three outs in the 7th inning when Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) tripled home Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) to draw the Lady Knights within one run.
  • Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) tied it up after she singled and Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) sprinted home. The game headed to extra innings tied at four.
  • Cleary tallied a run in the top of the eighth, forcing Gannon to score in the bottom of the inning.
  • With bases loaded, Wilp put a ball in play that allowed Ingerick to score.
  • Neither team was able to push a run across again until the 13th inning. With the bases juiced, Cleary's Newcomb singled to left, scoring two runs.
  • Gannon went to the bottom of the inning and tried to rally. A Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) single pushed Gannon to within one run, 7-6, but the Lady Knights couldn't tie it up.
     
GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Gannon had 11 hits spread across nine individuals. Perich and Tanilli each led the Lady Knights with two hits.
  • Gannon (15) and Cleary (17) combined for 32 runners left on base.
  • Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) recorded Gannon's first triple of the season.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon's 13-inning game was longest in over a decade.
  • The Lady Knights tied a season-high with 11 hits in the game.
  • Gannon also swiped a season-high three bases.
     
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Kentucky Wesleyan jumped on the Lady Knights early, Lexie Mullen launching a three-run shot to draw first blood.
  • The Panthers weren't done, though. With two more runners on, Andree Powell connected on a double to right center, clearing the bases. Kentucky Wesleyan led, 5-0, after one frame.
  • Gannon began to chip away, with Wilp on, Martinez roped a triple to the right field wall. Tanilli followed with a double and Gannon trailed just 5-2.
  • In the fifth inning, Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) crushed a two-run double that plated Gannon's third run. Ashley Bower (Middleport, N.Y./Royalton-Hartland) followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau). Gannon inched to within 5-4.
  • Gannon's best remaining chance was in the sixth when the Lady Knights had two runners on in the sixth but couldn't push them across the plate.
     
GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Gannon out-hit Kentucky Wesleyan, 11-9.
  • Tanilli and Wilp each produced doubles while Martinez hit a triple.
  • The Lady Knights stranded 12 runners compared to the Panthers' seven.
 
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Perich reached base for the eighth consecutive game to start the season. She's the only Lady Knight to do so.
  • Kr. DeMatteis owns the Lady Knights longest hitting streak at five games.
