Gannon Softball Opening Day Highlighted By Five-Inning Shutout of American International

THE RUNDOWN
  • Game One Score: Davenport 2, Gannon 0
  • Game Two Score: Gannon 9, American International 0 (5 inn.)

  • Location: Clermont, Fla. – Legends Way
  • The Short Story: Gannon Softball rallied to split on opening day with a 9-0 victory against American International in Clermont, Florida. Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) tossed a three-hit shutout, picking up the first pitching victory of her career.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) toed the rubber for the Gannon Lady Knights in the opener against Davenport.
  • The game opened up as a pitching duel as Beining matched Mallory Teunissen, of Davenport, out for out.
  • Both pitchers dominated through the front half of the game. Beining had Davenport hitless until the third inning when Lauren French hit a ball to centerfield.
  • Gannon registered its first hit of 2018 with a base-hit to right field from Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) in the fourth inning.
  • The Lady Knights had its first two-hit inning in the fifth with singles from Kherrin Morgan (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) and Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills). GU wasn't able to get those runners home, however.
  • The tie was broke in the seventh inning when Davenport's French singled, followed by a Selena Pauley triple. Alexa Flores continued with a double a double of her own, platting Pauley. Davenport took a 2-0 lead.
  • Down to just three outs remaining, Gannon couldn't overcome the two-run deficit as Davenport took the game.
     
GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Four Lady Knights registered hits, including Perich, Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep), Kherrin Morgan (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) & Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills).
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) pitched a complete game, allowing five hits, two runs while striking out a pair.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Lady Knights were shutout for the first time since Apr. 28, 2017 at California (Pa.).
  • Beining went the distance for the eighth time in her career. Opponents batted just .192 against her on Sunday.
     
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Freshman Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) got the start in game two and worked a scoreless first two frames, getting an outstanding play from her defense to end the second.  
  • Kaley Kempf attempted to score from second base on an Olivia Ortega single but Gannon sophomore, Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) rifled a throw to Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) to nail Kempf at home plate to end the inning.
  • Gannon began to get things rolling in the fifth. With the bases juiced, Lyndsey Lakatos (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler Area) hit a rocket to right that scored two. Gannon led, 2-0.
  • Up 6-0, Kristina DeMatteis cleared the bases with a double to left. After all was said and done, Gannon scored nine runs in the inning.
  • Ke. DeMatteis closed the door in the bottom of the inning, securing a 9-0 victory.
     
GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) went 1-for-2 with a run scored and three RBIs.
  • Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) and Martinez each clubbed two hits.
  • Morgan and Lakatos produced two-RBI games.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon pitched its first shutout of the season after being shutout in the first game against Davenport.
  • The last time Gannon was shutout and came back with a shutout of their own was April 22, 2017 at Seton Hill.  
  • It was Gannon's first five-inning run-rule victory since an 11-1 thumping of Slippery Rock on April 13, 2016.
