Gannon Baseball Earns Split With Wild Finish in Game Two Against LIU Post

THE RUNDOWN
  • Game One Score: LIU Post 7, Gannon 2

  • The Short Story: The Gannon baseball team split Saturday's season-opening series against LIU Post in Gaffney, S.C. at the Limestone Classic.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • LIU Post began the first inning with a single run before the Golden Knights took its first swings.
  • Gannon tied it up in the bottom of the first on a Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) ground ball that allowed Gregory Nicolia (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) to scamper home.
  • The Pioneers broke the tie in the top of the fourth with two more runs on just one hit. Gannon committed two miscues in the inning.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) led off the inning with a double to left field.
  • Cox advanced to third base on a wild pitch before Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) knocked him in with a shot to third base. Gannon trailed, 3-2.
  • LIU Post posted a four-spot in the top of the seventh that the Golden Knights couldn't overcome, falling 7-2.
     
GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Three different Golden Knights recorded a hit.
  • Mike Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) led the Golden Knights with three hits (3-for-4).
  • Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) went six innings, allowing five hits and just one earned run. He struck out two and walked one.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon opened up its 2018 season in Gaffney, S.C. for the fourth year in-a-row.
  • The Golden Knights were predicted to finish sixth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division according to the league's preseason coaches poll.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Like the first game, Gannon scored in the opening frame against the Pioneers.
  • With the bases loaded, Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) worked a walk to force home Nicolia.
  • Next batter up, Quiceno hit a sacrifice fly to right field. Two GU runners came home on the play and Gannon took a 3-0 lead.
  • The Golden Knights tacked on another run as a fielding error in centerfield allowed Nicolia to come home. Gannon went to the bottom of the first with a 4-0 advantage.
  • LIU Post got two runs back in the second inning and another in the third to draw within 4-3.
  • Nicolia registered the Golden Knights' first home run of the season with solo shot in the fifth.
  • Cardy added another Gannon run in the fifth when he batted in Colosi with a single to right field. Gannon led, 6-3.
  • A pair of doubles for the Pioneers in the bottom of the fifth helped spur a three-run inning to knot the game back up at six runs apiece.
  • LIU Post pushed across its seventh run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving the Pioneers their first lead of the game, 7-6.
  • Down to their final out in the top of the seventh, Cardy singled and was pinch run for by Joey DiBridge (Irwin, Pa./Hempfield Area).
  • Cox came to the plate and worked a 2-0 count before launching a go-ahead two-run shot to give Gannon an 8-7 lead.
  • Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh and struck out the side, earning the save for the Golden Knights.
     
GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • The top three hitters in the line-up combined to produce five of Gannon's eight hits.
  • Nicolia and Cox each homered for the Golden Knights.
  • Cardy and Nicolia both had two hits apiece.
  • Judy picked up the first save of his career, striking out each of the three batters he faced.
