KEY SEQUENCE
  • A big lead early had Lock Haven holding a fairly comfortable edge for most of the game, but Gannon closed strong to nearly complete a comeback. The Golden Knights got points on six of their final possessions of the game in the final two minutes, but the Bald Eagles hit just enough free throws down the stretch to keep it a two possession game until Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In what was destined to be a defensive battle, Lock Haven got out to a fast start, converting on both of their first trips down the court for a 4-0 lead. Free throws pushed that out to 7-1, and the guests hit back-to-back 3-pointers followed by a layup to make it 15-3 by the 13:00 mark.
  • Buckets from DeAnte Cisero (Chicago, Ill./Montgomery County (Ky.)) and Jonathan Harewood (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Anthony's) brought it back to single digits just over a minute later, but baskets from Matt Cerruti pushed it back to 12 at 19-7. A run from Lock Haven gave it the largest lead of the first half at 28-13 with 5:09 remaining in the half.
  • The Golden Knights had an answer though, as Cyril Ogbuagu's (Lagos, Nigeria/Riverdale Baptist (Md.)) layup, followed by two free throws 40 seconds later, got the hosts on a run. Porter grabbed an offensive rebound and stick-back to make it a nine-point game at 28-19 with 3:11 on the clock. Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) finished a fastbreak that started on a Frank Webb Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel) steal to make it a 31-23 game at the half.
  • Neither team had an offensive touch to start the second half, and the first points of the period wouldn't be scored until free throws by LHU's Marques Jackson at the 16:01 mark. A pair of 3-pointers from Cerruti pushed the lead out to 16 at 39-23 with 13:49 to play.
  • Joe Fustine (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) answered with a 3-pointer of his own, and a Harewood layup quickly made it an 11-point game, but the quick spurt was enough for the Bald Eagles to hold a double-digit edge for the next eight minutes.
  • A bucket from Cisero in transition sliced it to 49-40 with 5:41 to play, and Jovante Lee (Dothan, Ala./Northview) hit a jumper to get the Knights within seven. With the clock under two minutes to go, Lock Haven hit a pair of free throws to earn a 10-point margin, but Porter followed with a basket, and Cisero added a lay-in before a Gannon timeout trailing just 54-48 with 51 seconds left.
  • Cisero and Porter each scored in the final 30 seconds, but the Bald Eagles went 5-for-6 from the line the rest of the way to hold onto the lead and escape with a win.

GAME NOTES
  • The Gannon defense continues to impress, and has now held each of its past seven opponents to 66 points or fewer. The Golden Knights have yet to allow an opponent to shoot better than 44 percent, as Lock Haven finished 16-of-39 (41.0 percent) from the floor Saturday.
  • Porter led the way offensively for Gannon, netting 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting to go with eight rebounds. It's the third time in the last four games that the senior guard has scored at least 12.
  • Cisero was one of three Knights to score eight points in the game, doing so on 4-of-5 shooting and adding eight rebounds. Ogbuagu and Harewood also collected eight points, with Harewood chipping in four assists and two steals.
  • The win in the Hammermill Center was the first in 19 tries all-time for the Bald Eagles, who were 0-18 at the Mill entering Saturday.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon heads back on the road for its final game against a non-PSAC foe this season next week, heading to Notre Dame (Ohio) on Dec. 15.
  • The 2 p.m. tip from Murphy Gymnasium will feature live video, live stats and live audio.
  • The Golden Knights hold a 2-0 lead in the all-time series against the Falcons after an 88-63 win last season in Erie. It will be the first matchup between the teams at NDC.
  • The 7-3 Falcons suffered an 86-81 defeat at Charleston Saturday, and face Division I Cleveland State in an exhibition Sunday.
