KEY SEQUENCE
  • A free-flowing game early in the second half gave way to a defensive struggle late, but Jovante Lee (Dothan, Ala./Northview) changed all that in a hurry. After Mansfield used free throws in the final minute to climb ahead by three with 6.6 seconds left in regulation, the junior received a handoff from Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and lofted up a leaning 3-point attempt from 10 feet inside the halfcourt stripe. The result was as good as a spot-up jumper, with Lee tying it up at 57-57 to allow the Golden Knights to win it in overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After falling behind quickly on Saturday, the Golden Knights found some offense early on Sunday. DeAnte Cisero (Chicago, Ill./Montgomery County (Ky.)) converted a pair of layups in the first three minutes to give the guests a 4-3 lead, and free throws from Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) pushed that out to a 6-3 lead.
  • The Mountaineers answered with a big run though, netting nine straight points to shoot in front 12-6 by the 13:22 mark. A Lee triple halted that run on the next possession, and a 5-0 run capped by a three-point play from Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) with 7:09 left in the half brought Gannon to within 20-18.
  • Olawoye then picked up the offense again, hitting a pair of 3-pointers two minutes apart, both off of dishes from Frank Webb Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel), to give the Knights a 25-23 lead. Gannon held the Mountaineers to 0-of-5 from the floor and forced six turnovers from the 7:59 mark until the hosts picked up a bucket in the final seconds of the half.
  • The first five minutes of the second half were owned by the Golden Knights. After a Mansfield 3-pointer gave the hosts the lead, Porter tied it with a trey of his own. Cisero got hot as well, collecting three layups around a Kofi Mills (London, England/Martin Van Buren (N.Y.)) bucket to lead what turned into a 14-3 run for Gannon and turned it into a 39-31 lead by the 13:32 mark.
  • Mansfield responded with a hot streak from beyond the arc. The Mountaineers went 5-of-7 from deep over a stretch of five minutes to suddenly make it a narrow 47-46 lead for the Knights with 7:30 to play.
  • Gannon coach John T. Reilly called a timeout after that final triple, and the quick break seemed to work, as the Golden Knight defense became a brick wall the rest of the way. The Mounties were able to get to the free throw line to chip away and move in front late, but the hosts did not convert a field goal the rest of regulation.
  • Cisero buried a slick turnaround jumper to open overtime, and Lee sank another 3-pointer, this time from a more standard spot on the right wing, to put the Knights up 63-60 midway through the extra period. Gannon closed the final 30 seconds by going 6-for-6 at the line, with Johnson, Olawoye and Cisero each hitting a pair to lock up the win.

GAME NOTES
  • Whatever the Gannon coaching staff said during the timeout at the 7:30 mark of the second half worked. Mansfield scored just 16 points the rest of the way, shooting 2-of-15 from the floor and 0-of-8 from deep.
  • Lee, playing his most minutes in four games, responded with a needed scoring touch for the Knights, netting 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting and 5-of-10 from 3-point range.
  • Cisero showed he can keep up the offensive efficiency he's shown even with a higher volume of shots. He put up 11 field goal attempts, a season-high, and made seven. It's the fifth time in seven games the junior has shot at least 50 percent, putting up a huge 17-point, 13-rebound double-double, both career highs.
  • The victory snapped a short three-game skid for Gannon. The Golden Knights still have not lost four games in a row since early in the 2015-16 season. It also broke a four-game losing streak in overtime games that dated back to 2016-17.
  • Johnson, the junior floor leader and defensive stalwart, came up with his first points of the season in crunch time Sunday, going 6-for-6 at the line, all in the final two minutes of regulation and overtime.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon heads back to the friendly confines of the Hammermill Center Saturday for its first home PSAC game of the season against Lock Haven.
  • The 3 p.m. tip from Gary Miller Court will feature live video, live stats and live audio.
  • The Golden Knights hold an 25-1 lead in the all-time series against the Bald Eagles, including a perfect 18-0 mark at the Hammermill Center.
  • Lock Haven fell to Mercyhurst on Sunday afternoon to snap a two-game winning streak for the Bald Eagles, who are 2-3 on the season and 1-1 after the opening weekend of PSAC play.
