KEY SEQUENCE
  • Following perhaps their best overall performance of the season yesterday, Gannon overcame a slow start in the second half to forge ahead 56-55 with just 6:01 left in the contest. The Golden Bears answered on the next possession with a layup courtesy of Karen Lapkiewicz just 12 seconds later to go ahead 57-56 and never trailed again in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kutztown opened the scoring with a 3-pointer 90 seconds in, but Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) answered with a layup on the next possession. With a pair of Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) free throws, Gannon took its first lead at the 7:31 mark, and after a Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) triple three minutes later, the Lady Knights wouldn't trail again for over 10 minutes of game time.
  • That 3-pointer was part of six points in 25 seconds for Mitchell, who converted a three-point play the next time down the court with a layup. A trey from Boston McKinney (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) near the end of the first quarter helped extend that lead to eight by the end of the period.
  • The Golden Bears got off to a hot start in the second quarter, hitting four of their first five shots to jump back in the game. The guests made it a one-point game on a number of occasions, but answers from Mitchell and Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) kept Gannon in front until a 3-pointer and a layup from Kutztown put them in front 34-32 with 2:43 left in the half.
  • The Knights figured things out quickly though, scoring the final nine points of the half on a basket from LaCava, followed by a Tori Obenrader (Fryburg, Pa./North Clarion) three-point play. Rourke followed with a 3-pointer with 14 ticks left, and the hosts went to the locker room with a 41-34 advantage.
  • Kutztown was able to eat into that lead thanks to back-to-back triples three minutes in to the second half to make it a one-point game once again at 43-42. The scoring slowed down a bit as the quarter wore on, but a slick play by the Knights saw the ball get up the court quickly, with McKinney dishing to Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering), who finished just before the buzzer to make it a 52-49 lead.
  • The Bears got their first lead of the second half just under four minutes into the fourth quarter, opening up the frame with a 6-2 run to go up 55-54. LaCava responded with a quick bucket, but Kutztown did as well. A scoop shot from Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) at the 4:56 mark tied things back up at 58-all.
  • Two baskets from the guests handed them their largest lead of the game at 65-60, but Obenrader buried a 3-pointer from the wing with two minutes left to cut it back to a one-possession game. Kutztown calmly netted a free throw and a runner from Rylee Derr to expand it back to five, and sank enough free throws down the stretch to hold on.

GAME NOTES
  • LaCava tied a season-high in scoring with 18 points tonight against the Golden Bears. The Hermitage, Pa. native has posted double figure scoring efforts in seven consecutive games and is shooting 70.9% from the floor in that span.
  • Following a season-low 11 turnovers last night against Shippensburg, Gannon turned the ball over 26 times against the Golden Bears.
  • Gannon moves to 1-5 on the season when scoring less than 70 points. On the contrary, Gannon is 5-1 when scoring 70 or more.
  • Gannon posted just 22 points in the second half after scoring 23 in the opening quarter.
  • Mitchell strung together her second consecutive double figure scoring game tonight with 11 points. Mitchell has scored 10 or more points four times this season and eight times in her career as a sophomore.
  • The Lady Knights have received scoring contributions from throughout the lineup this season. Seven players registered a point tonight and all 12 players that saw the floor scored last night against Shippensburg.
  • Kutztown was powered by Derr, who entered the crossover clash as the team's leading scorer. She is now 10th in the PSAC in scoring average at 17.1 points/game.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns to the court following a break for the holidays in 2019 against second-ranked IUP on January 2.
  • Live stats, live video and live audio will be available from the KCAC in Indiana.
  • The Crimson Hawks are undefeated at 9-0 overall after cruising past West Chester, 97-69, on December 18.
  • IUP leads the all-time series 23-16 and the Crimson Hawks won both meetings against the Lady Knights last season.
