KEY SEQUENCE
  • Mired in a bit of a shooting slump late, the Golden Knights had a jumper from Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) with 10 seconds left clang off the back of the rim. The rebound was tipped out to the top of the arc, where Bloomsburg scooped up a fastbreak opportunity. Travis Elmore finished at the other end for the Huskies and earned an and-one opportunity, after which the Gannon bench was whistled for a technical foul, and two good free throws extended the lead to the final four-point margin.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Using five free throws to bolster the offense, Bloomsburg jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game. Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) got the Knights on the board with a jumper at the 16:43 mark, and the senior's offense kept the guests in the game, as he netted seven more points over the next four minutes to keep it a 10-point game at 19-9.
  • Frank Webb Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel), who was making his season debut, got a layup as the clock ticked under 10 minutes to play in the half to cut the lead to eight, and back-to-back buckets from Jonathan Harewood (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made it 24-17 with 8:06 left.
  • A jumper from Jovante Lee (Dothan, Ala./Northview) kickstarted a huge run for Gannon. While the basket just cut the lead back to 10 points, it was the start of what would become a 29-9 run. Four different Knights converted field goals in the final four-plus minutes of the half, capped by a 3-pointer from Joe Fustine (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) that made it 34-29 at the break.
  • Four points out of halftime from Olawoye kept the run going, and a layup from Kofi Mills (London, England/Martin Van Buren (N.Y.)) at the 17:11 mark gave Gannon its first lead of the game at 36-35. Porter netted two straight baskets off of Gannon steals, and a pull-up 3-pointer from Eric Gonzalez (Sabadell, Spain/Bachillerato) suddenly made it a 46-38 advantage less than six minutes into the half.
  • Bloom would chip away, getting it to 48-45 before a trey from Olawoye doubled that lead. An offensive board and stick-back from DeAnte Cisero (Chicago, Ill./Montgomery County (Ky.)) with 7:27 left to play bumped the Knights back up 57-53, but six straight points from the Huskies put them back in front and forced a Gannon timeout with 4:53 on the clock.
  • Free throws from Harewood put the Knights back in front 60-59 with less than four minutes to go, and an Olawoye drive and floater off the glass made it 61-60, but the hosts closed it out in the final seconds.

GAME NOTES
  • Just when the Golden Knights need to find a consistent scorer, Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) was efficient from the floor to net a career high in points for the second straight game. The senior shot 7-of-11 from the field to notch 15 points after going for 12 on Wednesday against Bowie State.
  • Frank Webb Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel) made his season debut, adding to the Golden Knights' defensive effort with a career-high five steals.
  • With numbers nearly even in most team categories, Bloomsburg held a definitive advantage at the charity stripe. The Huskies shot 43 free throws and made 24 in the game, in comparison to a 6-of-11 night at the line for the Knights. That's the most free throw attempts by a Gannon opponent since Edinboro shot 47 in a game on Dec. 16, 2015.
  • The Gannon defense continues to make its presence felt. Saturday was the fifth straight game the Golden Knights allowed 66 or fewer points. No opponent this season has made more than 21 field goals against the Knights.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon continues its conference-opening weekend on the road, heading to Mansfield for a Sunday afternoon contest.
  • The 3 p.m. tip from Marion Decker Gymnasium will feature live video, live stats and live audio.
  • The Golden Knights hold an 11-6 lead in the all-time series against the Mountaineers, a series that dates back to 1960-61. Gannon earned an 81-76 win the last time the two teams met in 2016-17.
  • Mansfield fell 85-70 to Pitt-Johnstown in its PSAC opener Saturday afternoon.
