HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon came out of the gates strong and opened up a 4-1 lead in the first set, highlighted by kills from Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha). Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) launched a kill to push the Gannon lead to 8-4 and the Lady Knights scored the next two points off kills from Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and Sampson for a 10-5 edge.
  • The Gannon offense continued to work efficiently with a 4-1 scoring run for a 16-8 first set lead. All four points came off kills for the Lady Knights, who hit .321 overall in the first set. Gannon maintained its lead with a kill from Sampson to make it 18-8 but the Vulcans clawed back to within one at 21-20. From there, Gannon doubled up the Vulcans by outscoring the five seed in the conference tournament 4-2, ultimately earning the 25-21 set victory. McClung put down the final kill of the set for the Lady Knights.
  • California opened up a 3-0 lead to start the second set following two kills and a Gannon attack error. The Lady Knights got back into the mix with a service ace from Sampson to tie the second set at five. Much of the second set followed suit as neither team was able to distance itself by more than a couple of points.
  • Smith registered a service ace, one of four in the second set for the Lady Knights, for a 16-13 lead. Two straight kills from McClung put Gannon ahead 21-19 before the Vulcans tied the set at 24. Gannon scored the last two points of the extended set for a 26-24 victory as Sampson put down an emphatic kill to put Gannon up 2-0 in the match.
  • Gannon jumped out to a 6-4 lead in the third set as Smith and Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) put down back-to-back kills to cap the early portions of the set. The Lady Knights scored three straight points for a 11-8 lead and the next point for Gannon sent the crowd into a frenzy after an excellent dig from Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) lead to a kill and a 12-10 lead for the Lady Knights.
  • The Lady Knights ended the match on a 7-1 scoring run to close the third set with a 25-19 victory.
