HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Things were even to start the first set with Gannon and Seton Hill tied at seven in the early going. The Lady Knights rolled off three straight points, highlighted by a service ace for Kenzie Lasher (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong), for a 10-7 lead. Another 3-0 run, this time sparked by the Gannon offense, put the Lady Knights up 14-10 after a kill from Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) and two aces from Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson).
  • With the first set tied at 16, Gannon used a 9-1 scoring surge to claim a 25-17 win in the first set. Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder), Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) and Sampson all posted kills in the final scoring run.
  • Gannon opened the second set with a 2-0 edge following a pair of SHU attack errors, but the Griffins responded in a big spot with a 9-2 run to take a 9-4 lead. Sampson brought Gannon to within 22-17 after a kill but once again the Griffins countered with three of the next five points for a 25-19 set two victory, tying the match at one.
  • Gannon shook off any cobwebs from the second set quickly in the third, jumping out to a 10-2 advantage. Sampson and McClung continued to prove why they are one of the top freshman duos in the country by notching multiple kills each in the early run.
  • A 6-2 run in the third set put Gannon in front 20-7 and the Lady Knights held on for a 25-19 set three victory despite a late rally from SHU.
  • Seton Hill jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth set, but Gannon eventually closed the gap to 15-12 following a kill from McClung. The Lady Knights stayed within striking distance, cutting the SHU lead to one point on several occasions, but the Griffins posted the 25-21 victory in the fourth set and tied the match at two.
  • Seton Hill was awarded the third point of the fifth set following a red card to the Gannon bench. The Griffins also got the next serve and took a 4-3 lead on the ensuing rally.
  • SHU jumped out to a 13-8 lead but the Lady Knights climbed back into the match-deciding fifth set with three straight points to make it 13-11. A kill from Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha) and an attack error by the Griffins brought Gannon to within one point at 14-13 but the Griffins clinched the conference crown with a kill on the next point for a 15-13 set win.

GAME NOTES
  • Smith knocked down six kills in the early portions of the match, helping Gannon to a .312 overall hitting percentage in the opening set. She followed it up with eight kills and six digs in the second set, ensuring her 17th match of the season with double-digit kills.
  • Leitshuh dug out nine attacks in the opening set.
  • Gannon held a 5-1 advantage in service aces over SHU in the first set.
  • Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) led all players with 30 assists. Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) recorded a game-high 26 assists.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon has advanced to the PSAC Championship game in each of the past three seasons.
  • 2018 marks the second straight season that Gannon has lost the PSAC Championship game in five sets.
  • The loss snaps a 19-match winning streak for the Lady Knights.
  • Sampson has put down 10 or more kills in 20 matches this season, including each of the last two postseason games. In addition, McClung registered 10 or more kills in a match for the 15th time this fall.
  • Neither team was necessarily efficient as Gannon held a .155 to .112 edge in overall hitting.
  • Wheeling Jesuit, the potential favorite to clinch the top seed in the NCAA Atlantic Region, won its conference championship in straight sets.

UP NEXT
