KEY SEQUENCE
  • In a game that had a deliberate pace throughout, Michigan Tech methodically chipped away at a Gannon lead, but eight straight points over a four-plus minute span in the second half made a big difference. The Huskies got 3-pointers from Isaac Appleby and Bryan Heath around a stick-back layup from Owen White to tie things up at 29-29 with 11:11 to play. The guests would not trail again in the game, after the 12-0 run made it 33-29.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A slow offensive start to a game that wouldn't be friendly to either team saw three lead changes and two ties in the first five minutes. Cyril Ogbuagu (Lagos, Nigeria/Riverdale Baptist (Md.)) got the Golden Knights on the board, and Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) nailed a 3-pointer to put them up 5-2.
  • A pair of free throws from Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) gave Gannon a 7-6 advantage with 14:48 to go in the opening half, and the hosts would lead for over 23 minutes of game time after that. A tip-in from Kofi Mills (London, England/Martin Van Buren (N.Y.)) extended the lead to 11-6 at the 11:25 mark, and the Knights closed the half on an 11-2 run. DeAnte Cisero (Chicago, Ill./Montgomery County (Ky.)) and Olawoye each had buckets to help Gannon net the final six points of the period and go up 22-11 heading into the locker room.
  • The Huskies, who didn't make a 3-pointer in the first half, got going quickly in the second half, hitting a triple on their first possession. Porter bumped the Gannon lead back out to nine at 25-16 shortly after.
  • After free throws helped cut it to a four-point game for Michigan Tech, two straight baskets from Jonathan Harewood (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Anthony's) shot the Golden Knight lead back to eight at 29-21, but the Huskies would score the next eight to tie it up.
  • That run extended to 12-0 after two more jumpers by the Huskies, but Mills and Olawoye converted on back-to-back trips down the court to tie things up at 33-all. A free throw from Mills drew the Knights even one last time at 36-36 with 6:50 to play, but a put-back from Heath for MTU gave the guests the lead for good.
  • Baskets from Oguagu and Mills each made it a one-possession game in the last five minutes, although the Huskies pushed back each time, moving ahead 48-40 on free throws inside of 20 seconds to play.

GAME NOTES
  • The Golden Knights hold a 49-15 all-time record in the 35-year history of the Gary Miller Classic, including 18 team titles.
  • Olawoye, who averaged 15.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists over the two games of the classic, was named to the all-tournament team. He was joined by Heath, who was named Most Outstanding Player, White, Alderson Broaddus's Brandon Simmons and Fayetteville State's Nakia Rivers.
  • The 11 points allowed in the first half by the Golden Knights matches the lowest scoring output against Gannon since at least the 2001-02 season. Gannon held Bloomsburg to 11 in the first half of a game on Jan. 10, 2009.
  • Olawoye extended his streak of scoring in double figures to four straight games to begin his career. He also notched a new high with a game-high four assists.
  • Mills turned in nine points on 4-of-6 shooting and nine rebounds.
  • Gannon falls to 6-12 all-time against the Huskies. Each of the first 17 games of the series came with both teams members of the GLIAC.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon will play its final home game outside of PSAC competition on Wednesday, when the Golden Knights host Bowie State in the second game of a doubleheader at 7:30 p.m. at the Hammermill Center.
  • Gannon leads the all-time series 4-2, although the Bulldogs escaped with an overtime victory last season.
  • Live video, live stats and live audio will be available.
