KEY SEQUENCE
  • Gannon used a 10-2 scoring surge to cap the third quarter for a 52-42 lead before ultimately preserving a 74-65 victory over host Alaska Fairbanks on Friday. The Lady Knights shot 52.9% (27-52) from the floor in the game and rolled up 27 points from the bench.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon got off to a hot offensive start early with a 10-2 run to start the game. Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) scored the opening basket of the contest, while Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) and Aiora Rivas (Ibiza, Spain/IES CTEIB) sunk three-pointers. Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) capped the early surge with a layup at the 7:02 mark in the opening quarter.
  • Alaska Fairbanks worked its way back into the game, but back-to-back baskets from Sam Pirosko (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) and Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) pushed the Gannon lead to 14-7 in the first quarter. Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) stepped back beyond the arc and knocked down her second three-pointer of the season with just over one minute showing on the first quarter clock.
  • With its lead quickly cut to five points (20-15) to start the second quarter, Rourke quickly countered with a three at the 9:06 mark. A layup from Rivas at 7:59 in the second pushed the Gannon edge back to double-digits at 25-15 and a three from Breanna Ransom (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) at 3:53 left in the half kept Gannon in front.
  • Alaska Fairbanks rallied with a strong finish to the opening half, using an 11-3 run following the Ransom three-pointer for a 36-33 lead. Tori Obenrader (Fryburg, Pa./North Clarion) cashed in from beyond the arc as time expired in the first half to tie things at 36 heading into intermission.
  • Baskets from Rivas and Rourke helped Gannon open the second half on a high note before a three from Boston McKinney (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) at the 2:02 mark of the third quarter expanded the lead to 51-42. Fairbanks opened the final quarter of play with the first two baskets, but layups from LaCava and Rourke carried Gannon to a nine-point lead at 56-47 with 6:59 remaining in the game.
  • Elise Torrence (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) scored her second basket of the season in just her second game with a layup at 4:49. She helped Gannon balloon its lead to 15 with a layup at 2:47 in the fourth quarter. Despite several spurts from Alaska Fairbanks which saw the Nanooks cut Gannon's lead to single-digits, the Lady Knights held on for the remainder of the matchup.
  • Gannon used some strong foul shooting down the stretch, making five of their last seven attempts at the charity stripe.
