KEY SEQUENCE
  • Just barely back into the lead for the first time in nearly a half of play, the Golden Knights appeared to be in for a see-saw battle as Fayetteville State cut the lead to one with 13:49 to play. Instead, Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) answered in a huge way, burying a 3-pointer on the next possession to keep the hosts in front for good. That keyed a 9-3 run that saw two big layups from Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and a pair of free throws from Cyril Ogbuagu (Lagos, Nigeria/Riverdale Baptist (Md.)).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kofi Mills (London, England/Martin Van Buren (N.Y.)) got the scoring started with a layup, and Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) hit a 3-pointer to give the Golden Knights another lead at 5-4 just over three minutes in. The hosts tied it twice more in the early going, but the Broncos surged ahead with a 7-0 run to make it 22-14.
  • Quick buckets from Dodds and DeAnte Cisero (Chicago, Ill./Montgomery County (Ky.)) cut that lead to one possession at 27-24 with six minutes left in the half. Porter had a basket of his own, then assisted on one from Cisero to pull the Knights to within 31-28 two minutes later.
  • Joe Fustine (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Porter each scored in the final minutes of the period, but a 3-pointer from Fayetteville State kept the guests' lead at 36-32 heading into the break.
  • A pair of slick passes from Jonathan Harewood (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Anthony's) led to scores from Mills and Jovante Lee (Dothan, Ala./Northview), the latter of which tied it up for the first time in nearly 18 minutes. A minute later, Olawoye buried a 3-pointer to put Gannon ahead 41-40 with 15:34 on the clock.
  • Another Olawoye trey two minutes later kicked off the key 9-3 run for the Golden Knights, a spurt punctuated by back-to-back tough layups from Dodds. The freshman duo again added to the lead as the clock ticked under five minutes to play, pushing the margin out to 59-50.
  • Yet another Olawoye triple made it a double digit game, as did a thunderous dunk with less than a minute to play from Ogbuagu. The Broncos managed to cut it to six in the waning seconds, but Olawoye was 4-for-4 from the line to seal the deal.

GAME NOTES
  • Olawoye, who had double figures in each of his first two games, took it to a new level Friday, going for a game-high 21 points on 5-of-9 shooting from deep. The freshman hit four of those five in the second half, seemingly each in a big moment.
  • Dodds put up solid numbers in his first career game. After not seeing action in the team's first two games, the freshman netted 12 points on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting, and added five rebounds.
  • The Golden Knight defense appears to be getting stronger, allowing a season-low 62 points in the victory. They also held the Broncos to a chilly 21.7 percent (5-of-23) from 3-point range.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon takes on Michigan Tech in Saturday's 7:30 p.m. championship game. The Huskies were a 78-69 winner over Alderson Broaddus in the first semifinal.
  • The Golden Knights and Michigan Tech have not met since the pair were GLIAC conference-mates in the 2007-08 season. The Huskies hold an 11-6 lead in the all-time series.
