Jones Goes Out With A Bang, Gannon Drops Heartbreaker To Lock Haven To Close Season

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Lock Haven 50, Gannon 48
  • Records: Gannon (2-9, 2-5 PSAC West) | Lock Haven (2-9, 1-6 PSAC East)
  • Location: McConnell Family Stadium — Erie, Pa.
  • The Short Story — Marcus Jones (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) capped his career with one of the best single-game efforts in Division II history Saturday, rushing for 410 yards and seven touchdowns as the Golden Knights were clipped by Lock Haven at a snow-covered McConnell Family Stadium to close the 2018 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A high-scoring affair opened up with Lock Haven taking a march down the field to go up 6-0. It didn't take long for the Gannon offense and Jones to respond, as the senior skipped 57 yards on the first play from scrimmage, and the extra point from Brian Strybel (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) put the hosts on top 7-6 less than three minutes in.
  • A big stop by the Golden Knight defense near midfield got the ball back to the offense, but with 80 yards to cover to hit paydirt again. Two rushes from Jones got a first down, and after a short completion, he made short work of the drive, ripping off a 63-yard run to extend the lead to 14-6 with 8:22 left in the first quarter.
  • Lock Haven answered with some chunk plays to find the end zone, and a two-point conversion drew the Bald Eagles even, and two straight punts ended the wild opening quarter.
  • After a couple runs from quarterback Cody Callaway (Grafton, Ohio/Midview) inched the Golden Knights into LHU territory, Jones ripped off his third score, this time going 33 yards. A blocked extra point left it a six-point lead, and Lock Haven went up on the next drive, forced a three-and-out, then scored again to quickly make it 28-20 midway through the second quarter. Another stop by the Bald Eagle defense and another score suddenly had the visitors holding a 15-point lead at 35-20.
  • The longest stretch of the game without a score -- five total drives -- spanned the halftime break, but the Golden Knights got going once again on their second drive of the second half. A 17-yard toss from Callaway to Jordan Smith (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon McMillan) down the left side opened up the field, and Jones carried the ball on the next three plays, the final on a 43-yard burst to close it back to a one-possession game at 35-28.
  • The Bald Eagles got deep into Gannon territory on the next drive, getting as close as the 6 before a strip sack by Andrew Berger (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) brought an abrupt end to the threat. Jacob Yost (Springfield, Ohio/Springfield) hopped on the ball to give it back to the Golden Knights.
  • That led into a wild fourth quarter, beginning with the guests pushing their lead back out to two touchdowns early in the period. A big kickoff return by A.J. Satcher (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) started the next drive at the Lock Haven 35, and Jones covered that in one play to make it 42-36, but Lock Haven used two big pass plays to jump right back in front 50-36 with 11:48 to play.
  • The Knights ran the ball 10 straight times on the next drive, with Melvin Blanks (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) getting three totes and Jones seven, including the one-yard plunge to make it an eight-point game, although he was stopped just short on a two-point conversion attempt.
  • Satcher again made a big play on the next drive, picking off a deep pass on the first play to set the Golden Knights up with a chance to tie. Jones hit the right sideline and was just tripped up at the 1, but hammered across the goal line on the next play to make it 50-48. Once again though, the Lock Haven defense stopped the conversion attempt just short, allowing it to preserve the narrow win.

GAME NOTES
  • Jones broke his own single-game Gannon rushing record, collecting 410 yards on 34 carries and scoring all seven Gannon touchdowns. The 410 yards is the third-most rushing yards in a single game in Division II history, and the second-most at any level of NCAA football this season.
  • The senior's seven touchdowns are the most by a player at any NCAA level this season, and one short of matching the Division II all-time mark.
  • Satcher led the Gannon defense with eight stops to go with his interception and big kickoff return.
  • Noah Harris-Lyles (Atlantic City, N.J./Atlantic City) recorded seven stops, all solo, and two sacks.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon closes the 2018 season with a 2-9 record.
