Third Set Rally Fuels No. 23 Gannon Women’s Volleyball in 3-1 Victory Over Seton Hill

  • The Short Story: With the match tied at one set apiece, the 23rd-ranked Gannon women's volleyball team used an 8-3 run to close an extended third set on its way to defeating Seton Hill, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at an energized Hammermill Center. The Lady Knights defeated the Griffins to earn their eighth straight victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After an even start to the first set, Gannon pulled ahead 9-6 with three straight points. Freshman Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) registered a pair of kills while sophomore Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) smacked a service ace for the Lady Knights.
  • Kills from Kerestes and junior Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) pushed the Gannon lead to 16-11 in the first set.
  • Sampson and Smith notched a kill each as Gannon led 21-18 in the first set.
  • The Lady Knights scored the final four points of the first set on their way to a 25-20 victory.
  • Gannon opened the second set in a flurry, jumping out to a 9-2 lead.
  • Seton Hill used a 6-1 burst to close the gap to 14-13 in the second set.
  • The Griffins reeled off a 12-3 run to take the second set by a score of 25-19.
  • Seton Hill carried its momentum into the third set with a 6-2 run.
  • Gannon rattled off four consecutive points in the third set to tie the score at six. Gannon used by a kill from freshman Kenzie Lasher (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong), a Seton Hill attack error, a service ace from junior Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) and a kill from McClung.
  • The teams traded runs in the third set as Seton Hill eventually managed to take a 22-19 lead.
  • Gannon responded with an 8-3 run to take the extended 27-25 set three victory. McClung tied the set at 24 with a kill while Smith and Kerestes provided the final two kills of the set.
  • Seton Hill opened the fourth set with a 6-3 lead.
  • The Griffins committed four straight errors as Gannon tied the fourth set at nine.
  • Gannon used back-to-back points to tie the fourth set at 15.
  • McClung brought Gannon to within two points at 22-20 in the fourth set.
  • The Lady Knights scored the final five points of the match to rally for a 25-23 set four victory. Smith put down a service ace to cap the match and hand the Lady Knights the victory.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon held a 67-52 edge in kills and a 62-51 advantage in assists.
  • Seton hill held a 14-6 edge in blocks and a narrow 83-82 advantage in digs.
  • Three players (McClung, Kerestes and Smith) had at least 13 kills. McClung led the team with 20, while Kerestes (14) and Smith (13) also helped pace the Gannon offense, which hit .208 for the match.
  • McClung and senior Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha) had four blocks each.
  • Leitshuh paced the Lady Knights with 29 digs. Freshman Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) added 17 digs and sophomore Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) chipped in 12.
  • The Lady Knights hit at an impressive .429 clip in the first set, the highest single-set total for either team throughout the match.
  • Lasher provided Gannon with a spark off the bench. She had one kill, two assists and three digs for the Lady Knights.
  • Seton Hill was led by Jessica Hanson offensively, who registered 14 kills on 25 attacks for a .480 hitting percentage.
  • Beyers had four kills on eight attacks for a .375 hitting percentage.

  • Gannon is now 15-5 all-time against the Griffins.
  • The Lady Knights are 4-0 in home matches this season.
  • While the Lady Knights and Seton Hill were playing in volleyball, the same two schools were squaring off just a few blocks away in football as part of Homecoming & Family Weekend.
