  • The Short Story: The 23rd-ranked Gannon Lady Knights volleyball team found an impressive rhythm as the match wore on and collected its seventh straight victory with a 3-0 sweep over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent California (Pa.) Friday night at the Hammermill Center in Erie. Freshman Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) led the way with a double-double performance following 15 kills and 15 digs for the Lady Knights while freshman Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) added 11 kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • California opened the match with a 5-1 lead before the Lady Knights came roaring back in the first set. Kills from McClung and Sampson capped a run of four straight points for Gannon to tie the match at five.
  • Gannon took a 13-10 lead in the first set following a kill from senior Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha).
  • Gannon scored seven of eight points to take a 23-20 lead in the first set. The run included four straight kills from the Lady Knights courtesy of Sampson (two kills), Johnson and McClung.
  • McClung smacked a kill off a pass from junior Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) to hand the Lady Knights a hard-fought 25-22 set one victory.
  • After trailing 3-0 in the second set, the Lady Knights surged ahead with six consecutive points for a 6-3 lead.
  • Gannon also used a 5-0 scoring run in the second set to pull ahead 13-9 and force a California timeout. Junior Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) recorded a perfectly-placed service ace to cap the Gannon run.
  • Sophomore Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) and Sampson each put down a kill as Gannon pulled ahead 15-10 in the second set.
  • Gannon used another large run, this time with six straight points, in the second set for a commanding 22-12 lead.
  • Freshman Valeria Torres (Gurabo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) handed Gannon a 25-14 win in the second set with a service ace.
  • The Lady Knights rolled to an 8-2 lead in the third set.
  • Gannon eventually expanded its third set lead to 19-9.
  • The Lady Knights scored four of the final five points of the night to earn a 25-13 set three victory.
  • McClung ended the night with a kill in the left corner to hand Gannon the sweep.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon has won seven consecutive matches and has posted three sweeps in a row.
  • Gannon has swept 14 of its 19 opponents this season.
  • The Lady Knights hit .328 for the match while the Vulcans posted a .169 hitting percentage as a team.
  • Gannon hit .325 in the first and third sets of the match.
  • The match featured 14 ties and six lead changes. The first set alone had 10 ties and three lead changes.
  • Gannon assisted on 41 of 44 kills. Sophomore Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) handed out a team-high 27 assists.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Sampson continues to emerge as one of the primary threats for Gannon with double-digit kills in five consecutive matches.
  • With a .500 hitting percentage, Sampson tied a single-game career high. She also hit .500 against Ursuline on September 1.
  • Sampson has posted a double-double in four of the last five matches.
  • McClung has notched double-digit kills in five of the past six matches. She has collected 10+ kills in eight matches this season.
  • The all-time series between Gannon and California was tied at 19-19 entering tonight's match.
