Gannon Men’s Soccer Slips In OT Heartbreaker to Millersville, 2-1

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Millersville 2, Gannon 1 (OT)
  • Records: Gannon (10-6-1, 7-3-1 PSAC) | Millersville (9-3-5, 7-2-2 PSAC)
  • Location: McConnell Family Stadium – Erie, Pa. (Senior Night)
  • The Short Story – In a season finale that saw both teams needing a win to earn a bye in the conference tournament, the Gannon men's soccer team fell to Millersville in gut-wrenching fashion, as the Marauders buried a rebound chance just a minute into overtime to grab a 2-1 victory Saturday night.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a feeling-out process that lasted over 10 minutes, Gannon's Ivan Manfredi (Chiavari, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Marconi Delpino) got off the game's first shot in the 11th minute on a rip that went wide.
  • More long stretches without a shot dotted the first half, although there was plenty of action and dangerous opportunities for the two sides. It took until Alex Lee Yaw (Jamestown, N.Y./Mercyhurst Prep) took a crack with just 11 minutes left in the first half for the first save of the game to occur, but Millersville's Brady Hochman kept it scoreless.
  • Lee Yaw got another chance just over a minute later, and Chase Flickinger made Gannon keeper Hedi Mehnaoui (Paris, France/Lycee Chevrollier) work twice to keep his own clean sheet in the final five minutes of the half, but it remained scoreless at the break.
  • The dual shutout didn't last long after the intermission though, as Srdjan Dujkovic (Darmstadt, Germany/) corralled the ball down the right sideline, looped a cross over the box to the foot of Lee Yaw. In the same motion as Lee Yaw received the ball, he slotted across the face of the goal in behind the far post to stake the Golden Knights out to the first lead of the game just 73 seconds into the second half.
  • As the minutes remaining began to tick down, the urgency on both sides increased. Sam Thornton (Rotherham, England/Wickersley School and Sports College) got behind the defense a few times in the second half, including a shot that drew a save out of the keeper just three minutes after Gannon got on the board.
  • The Marauders didn't get many true opportunities after falling behind, including just one shot that sailed high, and were still staring down a deficit with 10 minutes to play. A stellar play from Ethan Woods made the difference though, as the Millersville midfielder got a ball at the top of the box and uncorked a rocket that slid just under the crossbar to tie it at 1-1 with 9:20 to play.
  • Each team got one chance to break the draw down the stretch, but a shot from Thornton was saved, and one from Flickinger was blocked by the Gannon defense, sending the game into overtime.
  • An early chance for Millersville in the extra session proved to be the difference, as the guests lined up over a free kick from 23 yards out less than a minute into the period. Flickinger put the restart on goal, forcing a dive to his right from Mehnaoui. Jaxson Burns pounced on the rebound, curling the ball just over the line to give the Marauders the victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Millersville held a slight 10-9 edge in shots but Gannon had a 7-5 lead in shots on frame.
  • Things opened up offensively for both teams after the early portions of the match, which saw plenty of action around the midfield.
  • Thornton and Lee Yaw fired three shots each.
  • Millersville's Chase Flickinger, who leads the team in scoring, was perhaps the most dangerous player on the field. He finished the game with five total shots and three on goal.
  • Lee Yaw scored his fifth goal of the season.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The final day of the regular season was a chaotic one across the league, but the tournament field has been finalized.

  • Millersville locked up the No. 2 seed with the overtime win while Gannon dropped to the No. 3 seed.
  • Millersville evened the all-time series with the Golden Knights at 6-6.
