Gannon Women's Soccer Team Upends Cal U, 3-1

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's soccer team recovered from a minor setback the night before with a 3-1 win over California (Pa.) Wednesday evening at Cal U's Phillipsburg Soccer Facility. Taylor Lewis (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) had a five-point night after scoring the first two goals of the game and providing an assist on Gannon's third goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lewis put a head on Maddie North's (Leysdown-on-Sea, England/The Westlands School) corner kick in the 28th minute to put the Lady Knights up 1-0.
  • Lewis extended Gannon's lead to two goals in the 32nd minute when she secured a leading pass from Megan McCartney (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) in the top of the box and finished in the top right corner.
  • The Vulcans broke their scoreless drought in the 48th minute when Julie Darminio scored her second goal of the season on a pass from Maraye Alexander.
  • In the final minutes of the game, McCartney sent a corner kick into the box, where Lewis redirected it onto the foot of Vanessa Coccurello (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean de Brebeuf), who scored in the bottom left corner.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Lewis led Gannon offensively with two goals and an assist.
  • Coccurello recorded Gannon's final goal.
  • McCartney had the first two-assist game of her career.
  • North tallied her sixth assist of the season.
  • Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic) had her third win of the season. She made one save in goal.
  • Gannon outshot California in the victory, 22-6.
  • The Lady Knights held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Lewis scored her ninth and tenth goals of the season.
  • Wednesday was the third five-point game of Lewis' career. She also tallied two goals and one assist in the 3-0 win against Notre Dame (Ohio) earlier this season on Sept. 1, 2018 and another two goals and one assist in a 3-1 win over Mercyhurst on Oct. 15, 2017.
  • With her 35th career goal Wednesday night, Lewis passed Erin Cray (1997-00) into third all-time at Gannon. Lewis now trails Amanda Sharbaugh (51) and Mani Brueckner (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) (46).
  • It was also Lewis' third game-winning goal of the season and 12th of her career.
  • Coccurello's goal was her fourth of the year, which ranks third on the team.
  • Gannon now holds a 15-12 lead in the all-time series with California.
