No. 21 Gannon Women’s Volleyball Celebrates Senior Day With 3-0 Sweep of Shippensburg for 12th Straight Win

  • The Short Story: With perhaps the biggest matchup of the season taking place Saturday afternoon, the 21st-ranked Gannon women's volleyball team put on a show in an impressive 3-0 sweep against Shippensburg to clinch the PSAC Northwest division and lock up the team's 12th straight win on Saturday at the Hammermill Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The match was back-and-forth to start, but Gannon took control of the first set with a 10-2 spurt to take a 16-10 lead.
  • A quick kill from Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) put Gannon ahead 18-14 in the first set.
  • The Lady Knights scored seven of the final eight points in the first set for a 25-17 set victory. Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) rattled off four kills for Gannon in the closing barrage.
  • A service ace from Kenzie Lasher (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) pushed Gannon to an 8-6 lead in the second set.
  • Three straight points from the Lady Knights, including an ace from Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), put Gannon up 13-9 in the second set.
  • Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha) smacked a kill that capped a 4-0 run as Gannon led 20-14 in the second set.
  • Gannon scored the last four points in the second set for a 25-17 victory. Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder), Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) had kills in the closing rally while Leitshuh put down anther ace.
  • Gannon stormed ahead 13-7 to begin the third set.
  • Back-to-back points put Gannon up 18-11 off a kill from Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) and an ace from Sampson.
  • Shippensburg attempted to rally late, cutting the Gannon lead to 21-18, but the Lady Knights closed the set with the final four points for the 25-18 match-clinching victory.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Sampson registered a career-high 16 kills for the Lady Knights. She was one of just two players to put down double-figure kills in the match.
  • Gannon continues to score in a variety of ways with 10 aces and 18 block assists.
  • Kerestes added seven kills and three block assists.
  • Leitshuh led the way with 21 digs while Sampson chipped in 13.
  • The Lady Knights held a 10-1 advantage in service aces.
  • Johnson added three kills on seven attacks for an efficient .429 hitting percentage.
