  • The Short Story: The 21st-ranked Gannon women's volleyball team won its 11th straight match with a 3-0 victory of Pitt-Johnstown on Friday night at the Hammermill Center. The Lady Knights made short work of UPJ with nine service aces and 13.0 total blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first set with kills from Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson), Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington).
  • UPJ stormed back for an 11-8 lead in the first set, but Gannon 12 picked up consecutive points to regain the lead at 20-11. Sampson had three kills in the run and Kenzie Lasher (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) had a pair of service aces.
  • The Lady Knights scored five of the final six points in the set for a 25-12 set victory. Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) capped the set with a kill.
  • With the second set tied at four early, Gannon rattled off a 4-1 run to take an 8-5 lead. Smith and McClung smacked kills and Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) added a service ace in the scoring run.
  • The teams traded the lead at various points in the middle of the set before the Lady Knights scored four straight points, all coming from UPJ attack errors, to take a 20-15 lead.
  • Gannon continued to exploit UPJ errors and closed the second set with a 25-22 victory.
  • The Lady Knights continued to roll early in the third set as they opened a 7-3 lead. Two more service aces from Leitshuh highlighted the early part of the set.
  • Gannon followed it up with an 8-1 scoring run to seize control of the set with a 15-6 lead.
  • The Lady Knights capped the match with five of the final seven points to win the set 25-14. Sampson launched a kill to end the match.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Sampson was the only player in the match to post double-figure kills. She had 14 kills and added four digs and five block assists for a game-high 16.5 total points.
  • McClung had seven kills while Smith and Kerestes had six kills each.
  • Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha) was efficient with four kills on seven attacks for a .429 hitting percentage in the match.
  • Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) led the team with seven block assists, marking the fifth match this season she has had five or more block assists.
  • Leitshuh notched three service aces while Lasher and Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) added two aces each.
  • Beyers also handed out 32 assists.
  • Valeria Torres (Gurabo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) had eight digs for Gannon.
  • Gannon's blocking effort tonight was among the best outputs all season. The Lady Knights had 13.0 total team blocks, tied for the second most in a match this season. Gannon recorded 17.0 total blocks against Clarion on September 28 and had 13 blocks against Lake Erie (August 24) and West Chester (September 22).
  • The match had just five lead changes as Gannon maintained control early and often.
  • Pitt-Johnstown had a negative hitting percentage in two of the three sets tonight and hit just .010 as a team for the match.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Beyers had been a driving force for the Gannon offense all season long. She has recorded 30 or more assists in 17 of 22 matches this season.
  • McClung hit above .400 for the seventh time this season.
  • Gannon remains unbeaten at home this season with a 7-0 mark at the Hammermill Center.
  • Lasher has played an increased role of late off the bench.
  • Pitt-Johnstown was the last team to defeat Gannon at home. The Mountain Cats posted a 3-2 win over the Lady Knights in the PSAC Championship game on November 16, 2017 at the Hammermill Center, but Gannon ultimately got the last laugh with a 3-1 win over Pitt-Johnstown a few weeks later on December 1, 2017 in the NCAA DII Atlantic Regional.
  • UPJ entered the match on a three-game winning streak.
  • The Lady Knights moved up a pair of spots to No. 21 in the nation in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Poll.

  • Gannon concludes its six-match homestand tomorrow afternoon with a highly anticipated conference showdown against Shippensburg for Senior Day.
