  • Location: Mercyhurst Soccer Field – Erie, Pa.
  • The Short Story – Gannon scored three goals in the second half, including two from Alex Lee Yaw (Jamestown, N.Y./Mercyhurst Prep), while Hedi Mehnaoui (Paris, France/Lycee Chevrollier) made seven saves in goal to push the Golden Knights men's soccer team to a 3-1 road victory at Mercyhurst on Sunday afternoon.  The victory allowed Gannon to clinch a spot in the upcoming Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Men's Soccer Tournament for the third straight year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mercyhurst opened the game with two quick shots that were stopped by Mehnaoui.
  • The Lakers took a 1-0 lead with a tally from Connor Wilkinson nearly 13 minutes into the match.
  • Gannon looked for the equalizer on an attempt from Srdjan Dujkovic (Darmstadt, Germany/) that sailed wide of the goal. Eduardo de Bonis Encinoso (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain/Escuelas Pias Tenerife) launched a shot wide about eight minutes later.
  • Sam Thornton (Rotherham, England/Wickersley School and Sports College) had a header opportunity saved by Mercyhurst goalie Martin Jarc with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
  • Gannon fired four more shots as the first half clock dwindled but could not find the scoreboard.
  • The Golden Knights were able to breakthrough on the scoresheet just moments into the second half to tie the score at one. Joe Knox (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) finished off a pass from Dexter Abrams (Toronto, Ontario/Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School) for his fourth goal of the season.
  • Lee Yaw put the game away with two second half goals for the Golden Knights. Gannon took a 3-1 lead and the defense insulated Mehnaoui to preserve the victory.

GAME NOTES
  • There was no shortage of offensive chances for both teams. Gannon held an 11-8 advantage in shots on goal while the Lakers edged the Golden Knights in shots with a 19-14 advantage.
  • Thornton led Gannon with five shots on frame.
  • Four Golden Knights had at least two shot attempts.
  • The teams combined for 22 fouls in the match.
  • Mercyhurst held a 14-6 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Seven total yellow cards were issued in the match.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Knox has burst on the scene as an offensive threat for the Golden Knights. He has scored a goal in four of the past six matches.
  • Lee Yaw, from nearby Jamestown, N.Y., has also provided Gannon with an offensive spark while serving as a key contributor both as a starter and a reserve. He has posted double-digit shots in three of four total matches this season.
  • Gannon connected on several second half chances in a bounce-back effort on Sunday. The Golden Knights rebounded from a hard-fought 1-0 defeat against West Chester on Saturday which saw the Golden Rams notch the lone tally of the game in the 88th minute.
  • The Golden Knights picked up their 18th victory all-time against the Lakers with the win.
